Shear Genius: We Have A Winner!

The final episode of Shear Genius aired last week and all I can say is HA! Suck it, mean girl! As I said before, I have never been the popular girl. Because of this, I really, really, really disliked Janine and the way she treated people, namely Brig. Sure Brig could be annoying, but in the end, the judges did the right thing and awarded innovation and-gasp!-uniqueness rather than letting the status quo dominate. Good for them.

Ok--here's the final recap of the show.

It all comes down to this! The final three stylists, Brig, Janine and Matthew, met up with Orlando and Camila to receive their final challenge: “Create six looks for a Henry Duarte Fashion Show.” Each stylist consulted with Henry, who said he wanted futuristic hairstyles to complement his edgy fashions.
At the Shear Genius Nexxus Salon, the stylists picked their assistants from a grouping of their former competitors. Since Brig won the prior elimination challenge, she was able to choose her own two assistants and determine the order of who would choose after her.

Once the assistants were chosen, Janine immediately began wrapping her models' hair around large hairpins to set in major frizz. Brig decided on her most avant-garde look yet – what she called “laminated hair.” The look consisted of multi-colored hairpieces stuck in between plastic and layered on top of the models' simple buns. Matthew also got to work quickly on his vision, “bondage hair,” with zippers, tightly bound mohawks and even extreme foreheads courtesy of a few skullcaps.

After the runway show, the stylists met with their final four judges, Jonathan, Kim, Camila and Allure Editor-in-Chief Linda Wells. While all of the judges agreed that Brig’s work was unique and edgy, Jonathan criticized the use of props and lack of hairstyling. As for Matthew’s hairstyles, Linda called the zippers on his hair fun, but found his skullcap looks to be ugly and jarring. Kim called it hot, but was also bothered by the unsettling effect of the skullcap. Janine’s looks also underwhelmed the judges. Jonathan praised her for great technical work but complained that it wasn’t quite enough for this stage of the competition. Linda thought Janine’s work was beautiful, but Camila commented that she’d seen the look on the runway before.

In what some may call a shocking upset, it was Brig who ultimately rose to become Shear Genius. Her visionary approach not only won her the title, but $100,000 furnished by Nexxus Salon Hair Care, an apprenticeship with Nexxus and the opportunity to style hair for an Allure magazine photo shoot. Congratulations, Brig!

Take inspiration from the Henry Duarte Fashion Show and keep hair simple and polished when “rocking” an edgy headband.

• Apply a sleek styler, such as Nexxus Sleek Memory, to damp hair, and then blow-dry using a large round brush.
• Once dry, pull hair back into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic.
• Twist loose ends into a bun and secure with a bobbi pin.
• To finish the look, add a bold and unique accessory.

Shear Genius Recap!

Ok, let me just admit two things right now: 1) I am ready for Shear Genius to come to an end and 2) I know that I am in the minority, but I am so not a fan of Janine. Her clique-ish behavior and her childish hatred of Brig makes me shudder. See, I was not a cool girl in high school. I was never the popular one. I was more of a Brig than a Janine, and for that reason, I almost never side with the in crowd.

Alrighty then...on to the recap of the latest episode.

The stylists were feeling the pressure this week as they were whisked away to a VIP client's mansion in the hills for their shortcut challenge. Their VIP client? Camila, of course – and she was also the sole judge for the challenge. Orlando Pita was on hand to consult with Camila and the stylists, and he warned them all that Camila is very particular about her hair. Each stylist was given 45 minutes to create a glamorous hairstyle appropriate for the red carpet. They each seemed to struggle with her hair texture. Brig had to edit her vision to suit Camila's taste and neither was at all happy with the finished product. Jon’s nerves got the better of him once again. In fact, he got so wound up that he singed Camila with a curling iron. Camila also took each styling session as an opportunity to dish on the drama between the stylists, taking particular interest in Brig's personality clashes with her competitors. Matthew found the gossip session to be distracting. Janine was happy to complain about Brig but her down hairstyle didn't impress Orlando or Camila. In the end, Matthew's near perfect updo won the challenge and an advantage at elimination. (Let me add: if Janine or Matthew is crowned the winner, I so hope it is Matt who comes out on top.)

Afterward at the salon, the stylists were introduced to an iconic guest judge, Oribe. Then Camila revealed the elimination challenge: “Creating a Portfolio of Your Signature Style.” Their task was to create three looks for a portfolio that make up each stylist's 'signature style.' The stylists had to work with two models and then, for the twist, style themselves. How well they made a statement about their style and tied the three looks together would ultimately determine which three stylists would make it to the season finale.

Janine was inspired by modern Harajuku looks from Japan. While one model’s edgy style fit the bill, the second model’s oddly-shaped afro seemed out of place (the afro was square. Yes, square). Janine’s own photo failed to bring any of it together.

Jon appeared to know exactly who he was – the 'cut and color guy' – and while he delivered a finished look on a model with thinning hair and a clearly defined self-portrait, his second model underwhelmed the judges.

Matthew went for soft and sexy on both of his models and while their photos were striking the judges didn't like Matthew's self-portrait, calling it a real estate agent headshot.

Brig went for it in this challenge, finally deciding to take a chance on her own brand of avant garde hair and hoping the judges would see her vision. It was big and textured and striking on set, and while the judges were taken aback at first, they all came around to her side of thinking when they saw the finished photos.

At judging, Matthew and Brig were congratulated as the top two. Brig's fearlessness and distinct branding won her the challenge and both won their spot in the finale. Janine and Jon landed in the bottom two – but it was Jon's run-of-the-mill styles that sent him home. So, in the end, it will be the Wonder Twins versus Brig – as it's been all season long. Surprise, surprise. Expect a dramatic finale next week!

This week’s “how to get the look” from Kevin at Nexxus
Take inspiration from a daring hairstyle and make it work for your everyday.

Voluminous Waves:

• Apply a volumizing gel styler, such as Nexxus Lavish Body, to damp hair, and then blow-dry using a large round brush.
• While hair is still warm, wrap two inch sections around large Velcro rollers and allow hair to cool.
• Remove rollers and back comb each section at the root to create lift and body.
• Use fingers to shape sections into a unique style and pin curls randomly in the back. Then spray hair with a strong-hold hairspray, like Nexxus Maxximum, to hold the look in place.
  

Voluminous Updo:

• Apply a texture lotion, such as Nexxus VersaStyler, to damp hair, and then blow-dry using a diffuser attachment.
• Once dry, use a flat brush to comb hair into a high, tight ponytail on top of head. Secure with an elastic.
• Gently twist loose ends into a bun and secure with a bobbi pins. You want the texture to come through here, so don’t twist hair too tightly.
• Apply a dime size amount of a smoothing product, such as Nexxus Sleek Finish, onto your fingers and run over the bottom half of hair, avoiding the bun portion.

Shear Genius Recap: Everyone's Safe

Happy Monday! I hope you had a good weekend and are well rested, because it's going to be a busy week here on my site. Be sure to come back tomorrow for more. Until then, let's get this week rolling with a Shear Genius recap!

For this week’s shortcut challenge, the stylists walked into the salon to discover a mysterious large object shrouded by a black tarp. After Camila introduced guest judge and celebrity stylist Mark Townsend, she threw back the tarp to reveal a bookcase divided into three categories – styling tools, a technique, and an inspiration – with subcategories ranging from flat irons and sponge rollers to pin curls and braids.

Each of the stylists selected a numbered scissor box and then was instructed to pick a combination of the categories for the competitor standing to their left. Brig was able to choose for Janine—and choose she did, leaving Janine to create a rainbow-inspired mullet using a crimping iron. After all of the stylists were left with their respective tools and directions, Camila introduced them to their second guest judge Allure Editor-In-Chief Linda Wells.

Brig, as always, took on too much, attempting a cut, a color and a hairstyle that had to incorporate pin curls, sponge rollers and a Parisian theme. Unfortunately, her finished look under-whelmed the judges and left her at the bottom of the bunch. While Brig was being critiqued for her brassy color, Janine couldn’t help but comment about Brig’s lack of respect for the judges. She then went on to admonish Brig for her unprofessional attitude--all while spouting out profanities (because Janine's a professional and Brig, obviously, is not).

See what I said about Janine last week? She's a mean girl. I swear in her little "Brig sucks and shouldn't be here with the likes of PROFESSIONALS like me" you could have swapped out the work "professional" and replaced it with "mature" to make it a full-on high school hissy fit. Remember 10th grade? "Oh I hate Kara so much. She's just not MATURE like me!" Good times.

Anyhoo....Neither competitor seemed to win the battle, but both managed to stun the judges with their loathing of one another. In the end, it was the gorgeous shape and striking texture of Jon’s curly disco ball-inspired bob with bangs that won the challenge and an advantage at elimination.

The next day, everyone headed to the elimination challenge, which was also their first editorial shoot. Under the watchful eye of Linda Wells and Orlando Pita, Camila announced that the stylists would be given the opportunity to update some of the most memorable hairstyles in American cinema in a “Modernize Hollywood Icons” challenge. The looks were: Gwyneth Paltrow's romantic curls from “Shakespeare In Love,” Dolly Parton's buxom bouffant in “The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas,” Audrey Hepburn's classic updo from “Charade” and Bo Derek's braids from the movie “10.”

After seeing the stylists work on set and reviewing their final photographs, the judges seemed to really struggle to find someone to send home, since each one managed deliver in the challenge. In the end, Matthew and Janine went to the winner’s circle, with Matthew taking top honors for his Dolly Parton-inspired look. Not only was he able to seamlessly update Dolly’s classic style with soft and natural looking curls, but he was also able to work well with the photographer on set. The judges ramped up the tension even more by asking Brig and Jon to defend themselves from the chopping block. Jon reluctantly admitted that he believed his work was superior to Brig’s, and, in a shocking twist, Brig agreed that her head of hair wasn’t her proudest work and that she should go home. Taking everything into consideration, the judges then delivered a stunning reprieve to both Jon and Brig: no one would be going home this week – it was just too close to call, though I'd send Janine home for being an awful human being. Sadly, though, I think Mean Girl might just win the whole shebang.

• Apply a heat protecting styler, such as Nexxus Thermal Volume, to damp hair, and then blow-dry using a large round brush.
• While hair is still warm, wrap two inch sections around extra-large Velcro rollers to help build volume.
• Once hair is cool to the touch, remove rollers and use a boar bristle brush to loosen curls and shape the style.
• Spray hair with a strong-hold hairspray, like Nexxus Maxximum, to hold the structure of the style in place.

Shear Genius Recap!

Happy Monday! Bravo's hair stylist show, Shear Genius, is winding down. There's only a handful of contestants left vying to be dubbed the next top stylist. While I'm still missing Jacquelyn Smith's warmth and easy manner and the judges can be a bit too much at times, Shear Genius is still a very good guilty pleasure.

So let's recap last week's show: The competition nearly boiled over this week as the top five remaining stylists battled their way towards the $100,000 finish line. For the shortcut challenge, they were met by Camila and famed African American hair expert and celebrity stylist Kimberly Kimble, who informed them that their task would be to “Style African American Hair for a Formal Event.” Their clients were recent high school graduates looking for more sophisticated looks that were still age appropriate. Many of the stylists were immediately anxious to be styling African American hair; however, Janine was in her comfort zone, having worked as a stylist for rapper Lil’ Kim.

While none of the stylists produced disastrous results, Brig and Jon found themselves at the bottom. Brian’s Roman inspired and well-defined pin curls and Janine’s Gwen Stefani inspired twist rose to the top. Ultimately, it was Janine’s expertise with African American hair texture that gave her the win and the advantage of picking first client and her fellow stylists’ clients at the elimination challenge.

Let me stop for a second and just say this: I am not a fan of Janine. Sure, she does consistently well week after week, but she's just....ugh. She has a clique-ish mindset and seems like a mean high school girl. She's unappealing, and her annoyance/hatred of Brig makes me (oddly) like Brig all the more. Ok...back to the show...

For the elimination challenge, everyone met up at a red carpet event and where they met Grammy Award Winning singer and songwriter, Estelle. The challenge: “Create a 60’s/70’s Inspired Style for Estelle’s Red Carpet Event.” The clients were Estelle’s VIP guests and biggest fans. Janine chose her client and paired the rest of the clients to benefit her favorite stylists. The fact that Brig was given the longest, thickest and curliest head of hair was not lost on her at all.

Brian immediately decided to channel Warhol’s “Factory” muse Edie Sedgwick with a two-toned shag and thick roots. Jon re-colored his model’s hair to look richer and created a Jackie-O inspired look to match. Brig and Janine both attempted to channel Diana Ross with dueling afros, while Matthew went for the late 60’s cocktail party look with a thick braided crown and a bouncy ponytail.

Ultimately, the judges were most impressed by the styles of Jon and Janine, but it was Janine’s polished in the front and fierce in the back afro that won the night and the episode’s title line by Kim Vo – “This is hotter than a gay bar on fire!” Puh-leaze Ms. Vo. Could that been any more of an annoying thing to say? Geesh!

Brig’s attempt at Miss Ross, on the other hand, did not deliver, and her own attempts to impress the judges by editing her vision fell flat. Brian was admonished for using his inspiration too literally and creating a look that was not at all appropriate for a red carpet event. In the end, Brian’s thick roots, unnatural color and uneven hairstyle sent him packing, leaving Brig to fight against Matthew and Janine for another day.

Create a red carpet ready look at home by channeling a classic style from a different decade! You can easily make the style feel more modern and current with an elegant accessory.

• Spray dry hair with a leave-in conditioner, like Nexxus Humectress Luxe, to add moisture and help prevent breakage.
• Wrap one inch sections of hair around hot rollers, directing them back and away from the face to add volume. Then lightly mist with a setting spray, like Nexxus Lavish Body Spray Gel.
• After approximately five minutes, remove hot rollers and tousle hair with fingers.
• Create a side part and then use a brush to separate curls and add volume.
• Spray hair with a light-hold hairspray, like Nexxus Comb Thru, to help hold the style, then add a chic accessory that compliments your outfit.

Happy Monday! Here's to an awesome week. And, as usual, I'm starting off with a Shear Genius recap.

It was a rollercoaster ride for the six remaining stylists this week as they prepared for the Nexxus Challenge. With the tension continuing to build between Brig and Matthew, the line between personal and professional was thinning by the minute.

For the shortcut challenge, the stylists were met by guest judge and Nexxus Creative Director Kevin Mancuso, who along with Camila, brought in six Asian models holding various shapes in their hands. The challenge: angular precision cuts.

This excited some of the stylists while intimidating others, including Janine, who admitted that precision cutting was never her strong suit. Luckily, Kevin Mancuso was on-hand throughout the challenge to share his insights with the contestants. Those who listened to his expert advice found themselves on top, while those, like April, who ignored Kevin’s tips and the challenge’s goal, were on the bottom. At the end of the thirty minutes, Janine surprised herself and delighted Kevin, with her literal translation of a crescent moon shape – a win that garnered her first pick of client at elimination.

The next day, the stylists met up with Camila and Kevin back at the salon, along with six young working actresses for a “Headshot Photo Shoot Elimination Challenge.” The goal – create a look that captured the actress’ personality and ultimate acting role. Once Janine chose her client, the rest of the actresses were able to pick their stylists. Matthew, whose confidence was already shaken after the shortcut, was picked last – a fact that was not lost on Brig. Left with a full array of Nexxus products to help the stylists achieve the desired looks, they were given one hour to work their magic. Before leaving them to their work, Camila revealed one final motivator: the winner would be photographed in a Nexxus advertorial for Allure magazine.

The actresses were as varied as the stylists – Brian’s wanted a “hot geek” look, while Brig’s wanted to pull off an “action hero” vibe; Janine’s actress was pushing for a sexy girl next door, while April’s wanted a California blonde style. Brian seemed to struggle with the purpose of a headshot and went for more of an editorial approach. April enjoyed the styling process, but left the judges feeling flat at the photo shoot. Even Jon’s so-so styling left the judges cold.

After the headshot photo shoot wrapped, the stylists were surprised to hear that they would be receiving an additional thirty minutes to style a second, and completely different, headshot look for their clients. This seemed like an opportunity to some and a burden to others.

At the judging, it was Matthew and Janine who rose to the top with their stunning and completely cast-able looks. Kevin and the other judges were impressed not only with their headshot looks, but also with their presence on set. It was Matthew’s use of the right products that produced pictures that truly spoke a thousand words – and brought him a win and a sense of redemption for the episode. On the bottom sat April, who managed to age her client by at least ten years in both of her shots; and Brian, who went too far with his interpretation of “hot geek.” Ultimately, April’s against-the-grain approach got her cut from the competition. Only five remain to cut again next week.

Romancing the Wave: Incredible shine and movement make this classic style feminine.

• Create volume by applying Nexxus Mousse Plus evenly throughout damp hair, working from root to tip.
• Blow-dry using a large round brush, smoothing as you go.
• To help hold curl, lightly spray each section with Nexxus Comb Thru Hairspray before using a curing iron on the bottom half of locks.
  

Rocker Chic: Smooth and sexy hair with lift makes this look rock!

• To protect hair from styling damage, spray Nexxus Heat Protexx generously from root to end and dry as normal.
• Use a comb followed by a flat iron to perfectly smooth locks.
• Pull back top section of hair, pushing forward to create a “bump” effect. Use bobbi pins to secure in place.
• Again, finish look with a light misting of Nexxus Comb Thru.

Ok, so we're getting down there with Shear Genius. At the start of last week's show, we started with just 7 contestants and we're whittling them down to the top talent (or, in the case of Brig, the top attention whores).

Here's a recap of the show:
For the shortcut challenge the stylists were greeted by Moulay Yacoubi (I'm glad I looked that up because I had no idea what this guy's name was. Thanks, Camila and your crazy accent!), world-class dry cutting instructor. Along with Camila, he informed the stylists that they would be giving various curly-haired models a straight, graduated bob. Now here's one complaint I have about Shear Genius: I am not a stylist. I have no idea if it's hard to cut curly hair into a bob. I don't know why dry cutting is better or worse than cutting wet hair. And I don't understand why one contestant (April) was so offended that she had to cut a graduated bob. WTF? Chill lady...just cut the damn hair.

So the stylists had to dry cut the hair (which is apparently difficult) and they would also have to do the cut on dry hair and to turn in their cutting tools before shampooing and blow-drying. Once again, Matthew and Janine made up the top two with their sleek and sophisticated bobs, and Janine won the challenge. At the bottom sat Brig, who over-cut and under-whelmed with her disjointed haircut, and April, who fought the challenge and the judges every step of the way.

The next day, the stylists met Camila and Orlando in the salon, along with red carpet master stylist Robert Vetica. The elimination challenge would prove to be an emotional one for the contestants and seven army wives whose husbands were currently serving overseas. The goal was to “create 40’s pin-up style using finger waves or pin curl set” and the finished styles would be captured in video messages to their husbands, along with a pinup photo.

Once the photo shoot was over, the judging began. At the bottom sat a nervous Janine, whose original hairstyle plan was ruined by poor time management; Amy, who seemed to lack the reference point for a true 40’s hairstyle; and April, whose vision seemed spot on, but whose finished product was less than complete. In the end, Amy’s lack of knowledge sent her home. At the top sat Matthew, whose striking 40’s vintage hairstyle transformed his client into a true pinup starlet – but, perhaps to his own surprise, he was knocked off of the winner’s pedestal by Brig, whose spun-gold color and ambitious, pin-up look won the day.

This challenge was so-so for me. I loved the idea of a pin-up challenge, but I felt a little bad for the women who had to get all done up in a way that was not natural to them and then to shot a video for their husband while being filmed and while having their hairstyles judged. It seemed a little awkward.

Anyway...here's how to get Brig's winning look. The tips, as always, come from Nexxus Creative Director Kevin Mancuso.

Go retro with finger waves and curls for a fun and flirty “pin-up worthy” style!

• Apply a styling gel, like Nexxus Exxtra Gel, to damp hair and distribute evenly to the ends.
  
• Blow dry with a smaller-sized round brush, concentrating on smoothing the ends.
• Use a medium-size iron to create curls and then clip each into place with a bobbi pin to hold shape.
• Once curls are completely cool, remove bobbi pins and use fingers to tousle and style into a retro shape that frames the face.
• Finish the look with a misting of light-hold hairspray, like Nexxus Comb Thru, to help hold the style

Shear Genius, Episode 4

Ok--It's Monday, so that means it's time for another Shear Genius recap, complete with tips from Nexxus Creative Director Kevin Mancuso so you can achieve the winning style at home.

For this week’s shortcut challenge, the eight remaining stylists were given a salon-full of gorgeous and exotic flowers and the task of incorporating them into an abstract hairstyle. The judge for this challenge was esteemed editorial stylist Harry Josh, best known for his work with supermodel Giselle Bündchen.

As winner of last week’s elimination challenge, Matthew was given first choice of model, while the rest of the models and stylists were paired up at random. Adee’s fear of failure (at least that was his excuse du jour) continued to be a stumbling block to his success, while Brig’s ambition prevented her from seeing her vision to completion. Meanwhile, April and Brian’s chic styles rose to the top, with Brian winning the challenge and gaining an advantage at elimination – pairing the clients with the stylists.
The next day, the stylists donned formal attire and met up with Camilla and guest judge Tabitha Coffey, Shear Genius Season 1 fan favorite, at a traditional Indian wedding ceremony. How awesome is Tabitha? She's outspoken but not in a way that makes her over the top. She has an opinion, she voices it, and woe be the person who doesn't agree. She's come a long way since the first season of SG, and it's good to see her on Bravo in her own show.

Anyway, the elimination challenge was to completely restyle the eight bridesmaids’ hair for the wedding reception. Stylists were given only an hour and a half to manage this task and, since this was a challenge happening in “real life”, their clients’ satisfaction was of the utmost importance.

Brian, who had become friends with Adee over the course of the season (though I fail to see anything likeable about Adee), decided to give him his client of choice. Unfortunately for Adee, looks are often deceiving, as he was left with a client who was hard to reason or negotiate with. In fact, many of the stylists were left with fussy clients – and in the end, Jon, Janine and Brian, the three stylists who were able to take control of the situation and convince their clients to trust their talent, made up the top three.
As much as the clients may have been hard to deal with, I have to think that it IS the job of the stylist to educate a client. There are times when I am not exactly sure what I want done with my hair. I only know that I want something different, something that will look good and be easy to do. Clients have no idea--as a rule--about hair styles. I think using this as an excuse is just lazy.

At the bottom sat Amy, whose client was shy and difficult to communicate with; Brig, who wasn’t able to execute the simple and straight style her client wanted; and Adee, whose hairstyle prompted Jonathan to utter the episode’s title line, “I’m borderline pissed off about that hair.” In the end, Adee’s self-doubt and second-guessing lead to his elimination and Brian’s total transformation hairstyle was dubbed “Shear Genius" since Brian actually worked with his client and came into the challenge with ideas, not excuses.This week’s “how to get the look” from Kevin

A quick hairstyle change mid-party can be just as dramatic as a full wardrobe change. Try taking down an updo and reworking hair to create a fun and flirty down style that’s sure to turn heads.

• Take down updo by removing bobbi pins and accessories, then gently comb through hair with fingers to help detangle.
• Sweep hair to one side and use bobbi pins to secure in place.
• Use a large barrel curling iron to create random curls throughout loose section of hair.
• Finish the look with a misting of strong-hold hairspray, like Nexxus Maxximum, to keep the style looking gorgeous.

Shear Genius Episode 3 Recap

Time for another recap of Bravo's latest season of Shear Genius!

I keep saying it, but it still remains true: Camila Alves is not the best host. Far from it. Ok...moving on.

So, for the Short Cut challenge the contestants had to use hair extensions on men to give their male hair models a more rockin look. Honestly? Hair extensions on men? Blech. I like (no....I love!) long-haired men, but men wearing hair extensions seems a little sad (I'm looking at YOU, John Travolta!)

Anyway: Matthew got first pick and Amy got last. Unfortunately for Amy, not only did her client have a difficult head of hair to work with, he also had a difficult personality. Faatemah also struggled, having never worked with men’s hair. The British guy who thinks he's awesome but kinda sucks (Adee) had food poisoning and barfed in the middle of the competition (I guess he's also opposed to men wearing hair extensions). This granted him a reprieve from judging. Matthew and Janine, on the other hand, delivered clever transformations, which landed them the top two spots respectively, and garnered Matthew a very important edge for the Elimination Challenge.

For the Elimination Challenge, the contestants were whisked away to the country for their first cover shoot. Within the “Romance Novel Cover Style” challenge was another obstacle – they would have to work in teams of two. Matthew’s earlier winning advantage was then revealed: he was able to work solo if he chose and was granted the power of coupling up the other stylists and matching them with their models.

Matthew quickly chose to team up with Janine and picked Brig, who tried to sabotage his work the previous week, to work solo. Brig's the girl with the yellow hair and big bows. She's a weird one. She's an obvious attention-whore, but there's something awkward about her that reminds me of Muriel Hislop from Muriel's Wedding. And if you haven't seen Muriel's Wedding, Netflix it immediately. It's an awesome movie.

In the end, Brig wowed the judges with her ability to rise to the occasion. Matthew and Janine had the edge, however, by delivering great color, two romantic and cohesive hairstyles and impressive extensions. On the bottom of the pack sat Adee and Faatemah. This fact did not sit well with Adee, who proceeded to throw a minor tantrum during the judging (he's such an annoying baby).

In the end, however, it was Faatemah’s lack of vision and focus that sent her packing. I think the judges screwed up--Adee needs to go...and soon.

Shear Genius, Episode 2

Time for another Shear Genius recap!

So the second episode aired on Wednesday and I must admit, I am still not wild about the new host. Through no fault of her own, she's going to be compared to former host Jaclyn Smith and the comparison doesn't pan out in her favor. The new host (Camila Alves) just doesn't have the charm, the warmth, or the polish of Jaclyn. *Sigh.*

I'm also still getting used to the contestants, though in a week or two I'm sure I'll find people to root for. It takes so time to get used to people and learn to like them (or hate them!)
So for the second episode, the contestants gathered to learn their short cut challenge but were surprised to learn that Giacomo wanted to go home to be with his family. Ok, fine. You're not cut out for this type of thing, so adios Giacomo!

For the shortcut challenge, “Color, Repair & Style,” Kim Vo produced 10 “blondorexic” clients, whose tresses were in dire need of repair. I must say that as a girl with platinum blonde hair, I as a bit annoyed with the challenge. Platinum blonde can be done in a way that keep the hair healthy. Not everyone with platinum locks is "blondorexic" and not every blonde has to change to darker color to look better. Whatevs.
During model selection, Matthew and Brig (the yellow-haired girl who wears unfortunate gold lame bathing suits, and huge bows) were last to pick from heads of over-processed and unnatural locks. Brig, holder of the last pick, managed to trick Matthew into thinking that she wanted the challenge of reviving the most damaged hair of all. Matthew took the bait and the client, much to Brig’s satisfaction. In the end, however, Brig underestimated Matthew’s color talent, and his total transformation of his client garnered him the shortcut win and an edge at the elimination challenge. (Cue evil laugh.) Adee, April and Brian, whose model had to endure bleach in her eye and an unfinished style, made up the bottom three.

For the elimination challenge, the contestants headed to the famed Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where their challenge was to create

a style for a server that was inspired by a single dish from the Dakota Restaurant’s new menu. Back at the Nexxus Salon, the stylists went in many different directions, from literal translations of their dish featuring props and color, to more subdued offerings. In the end, the judges rewarded Jon for his polished take on seared scallops, while Arzo’s aimless vision of Tuna Tatake fell flat and prompted her elimination. The challenge was a bit odd, but the winning look was lovely and I can't complain with Arzo's tuna-haired flop ending up as the big loser.

This week’s “how to get the look”

Have fun with your hair by taking inspiration from things outside the norm, like an artistically sculpted appetizer. For a yummy style like last night’s winning look, try adding a bright accessory to an ordinary up-do. With this look, you are sure to be the dish du jour.

• Shampoo and condition with hydrating products, such as Nexxus Therappe and Nexxus Humectress.
  
• To create supple texture, apply a mousse, like Nexxus Gorgeous Curls, onto damp hair, then blow-dry, paying special attention to smooth the top section of hair.
  
• Once dry, pull hair back into high ponytail and curl random sections with a small barrel iron.
  
• Use bobbi pins to secure individual curls around the ponytail into an artful up-do.
  
• Help prevent flyaways and maintain the style with a light misting of hairspray, like Nexxus Comb Thru.
• Finish the look by pinning an elegant accessory, such as a flower, to one side of the up-do, or several flowers in between the curls.

Shear Genius, Episode 1

The first episode of the new season of Shear Genius started up on Bravo last week, and wow! I've forgotten how crazy this show is. When you watch it, you have to remind yourself that the point of this show is not to display how the contestants can style hair nicely for everyday wear. No. The point of this show is hair as art; stylists as creator. And that's ok with me.

The new season means a whole new cast of characters and, sadly, a new host. Jacquelyn Smith, the former host, has been replaced by Camila Alves. Now, Camila might be a great model and a very nice person, but she is no Jacquelyn Smith. Her hosting skills leave much to be desired. Hopefully she'll get better, but in the first episode, she seemed stiff and didn't do a great job with reading her lines. Oh well. Also new this season is the addition of Jonathan Antin as a judge. Jonathan is a nut, but he's fun to watch.

The new cast is chock-full of drama queens and over the top personalities. One contestant skated around in rollerskates and a gold bathing suit that left very little to the imaginaiton. Really? Ok...

So, the 12 contestants didn't have long to size each other up before their first Shortcut Challenge: Punk To Polish. Arzo drew first pick while Amy, the British ex-pat, was saddled with last choice, a head full of heavy, black dreadlocks. After two hours, Amy emerged victorious, transforming a mess of hair into a sleek and sophisticated asymmetrical bob. Faatemah, Brian and Janine made up the bottom three.

Ahead of the first elimination challenge, the stylists were thrilled to learn that their mentor for the season was stylist to the stars Orlando Pita. Orlando and Camila revealed that the elimination challenge would head to the runway for swimsuit client L*Space. The catch: the models would only wear bottoms, leaving the stylists to cover their chests with creative hair designs. In the end, Amy went from top to bottom alongside Adee and Joey, whose lack of vision and execution lead to this being his final cut. Janine, fittingly, went from bottom to top with her ‘sea nymph’ hairstyle, which won her immunity from elimination for the next episode.

The challenges were a bit crazy, but the judging seemed solid. Both the Amy and Janine deserved their wins. I liked the Short Cut challenge a lot--it was interesting to see how the stylists would take a woman with bright pink hair and transform them into respectable, more conservative versions of themselves in a very short period of time.

While I doubt you're going to try to cover your ta-ta's with hair before instead of wearing a proper top, here are tips on how to get the winning look:

You can make the winning look into an everyday style by still creating fun volume. Try recreating the same silhouette without going over the top, for a style that is both modern and wearable.

• Shampoo and condition with products that will provide extra body, such as Nexxus Diametress and Nexxus Sublime Volume.
  
• For added lift, mist a volume boosting spray gel, like NEW Nexxus Lavish Body, onto damp hair, then turn head upside down and blow-dry.
  
• Once dry, flip head back over and smooth out bangs.

Shear Genius Previews!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am hooked on Bravo and their ultra-addictive reality shows. Returning tomorrow (Wednesday, February 3rd) is the hair styling competition show Shear Genius. For their third season, Shear Genius is getting some personnel changes--and I for one am looking forward to Jonathan Anton!

In the premiere episode, the twelve stylists arrive in Los Angeles where for their first challenge, the stylists must give unruly punk rockers a more polished look. The competition gets even more edgy during the elimination round when the contestants collaborate with a hot new swimwear company to create sophisticated styles for a risqué fashion show. Which contestant will be the first to stand out and which will be sent home packing their scissors?

Shear Genius: Finally! The Finale!

Shear Genius wrapped up this week and not a minute too soon. I was all gung-ho to watch SG when it started, but I soon got fatigued by the whole thing. Anyhoo....here' my final recap of the SG finale.

Since this was the big, big show, there was no need (or time) for a short cut challenge. Instead Rene Fris (hi, hi!) explained (in a way only Rene can!) the final challenge. Each remaining contestant got a lock of hair in either blonde, brown, or red, and they were told they would be telling the story of one woman's life at four different points along the way. They were to create a story for this woman that tells who she is at 18, 30, 45, and 60. They would have four different models and would need to create hairstyles for all four models in just three hours.

Charlie, Dee and Nicole had the entire night to figure out their storylines. I must say, its a good thing these three are stylists and not writers, because their character stories were a bit, well, thin.

Dee's story centered around a "rock star." At 18, she was trying to make it (I think--I didn't totally get what the 18 year old was supposed to be), at 30 she had released her first album, at 45? I can't remember what she was...a washed up one-hit wonder? Getting ready for her gig as clip-show commentator on Vh1? At 60, she was a grandmother who went by Mama Red. Ok...if you say so.

Charlie's equally lame story dealt with a movie star. At 18, she was transitioning from a child star to a full-blown actress, I think that at 30 she had won an Academy Award or Golden Globe or something, at 45 she was sort of resurrecting her career by starring in a Hitchcockian film, and at 60 she went on to direct her first film. I may have that mixed up, but does it even matter?

Oh, I almost forgot Nicole's storyline. Hers was about an 18 year old who didn't have a lot of money but was the "it" girl at school, at 30 she was working but fell in love, at 45 she "had more money" and a pack of kids, and at 60 she was a grandmother and proud of herself for being a good breeder. A teary Nicole admitted to an equally teary Jaclyn that her character was based on her mother. Aw! Trying to get sympathy points to cover the lack of creativity. How sweet.

I didn't think that any of the four sets of final haircuts was "shear genius." Dee's 18 year old's hair was sloppy looking and had extra strings of hair falling into the model's face. The judges loved it, but I am not entirely sure I would want styling advice from Kim Vo and his inflated lips. The rest of Dee's looks were blah but passable. Charlie did a few up-dos that made his models look like they were coming from a set from a 1950s movie. They were dated, not retro. And according to Vo, the 18 year old had a "hair burrito." That sounds entirely unappetizing. That leaves Nicole who's average, story-less characters had average, wow-less hair.

In a not so surprising move, Nicole was sent packing. Then the Shear Genius Angel announced that Crazy-Eyed Dee was the winner of Shear Genius. It was Charlie's title to lose and he officially lost it. I guess his boyfriend won't be getting a new nose after all!

So that's it. Dee's the Shear Genius winner, whatever that means. I say: Meh. Yawn. SG went out with a fizzle. Oh well...

Get the Winning Look

Here are tips on getting the winning look from this week's Shear Genius!

Avant-garde hairstyles are great for photo shoots and the runway, but don’t always translate to everyday. For a more wearable look that’s still edgy, try a tousled approach with a few fun accessories.

• Shampoo and condition with products that help to boost volume. Try Nexxus Nexxus Diametress Shampoo and Nexxus Sublime Volume Conditioner.
• To hold and maintain curl, apply Nexxus Alluring Curls to wet hair. Wrap different sized sections of hair around Velcro rollers to create a unique texture.
• Apply heat with a blow-dryer until hair is dry. Allow locks to cool and remove rollers.
  
• Use a curling iron randomly all over head to add in a few defined curls.
  
• Take various sized sections of hair and pin on top of head with bobbi pins. Don’t worry if your updo is not “perfect.” The beauty in this look actually comes from the quirky mistakes.
  
• Go back through hair and pull out few tendrils for added softness and dimension.

Shear Genius: Are We There Yet?

Ok, maybe it's just me, but I am getting Shear Genius fatigue. And after this week's episode, I officially don't care who wins. Just hand Charlie the title, the check, and let's move on.

Here's a recap of the latest episode....not an enthusiastic recap, but a recap nonetheless.

SHORT CUT CHALLENGE
The remaining four stylists had to work on twins. Identical twins with the exact same hairstyle. The goal was to make each twin unique, to have each twin stand out as an individual. Wow. As I sit here writing this, I have almost no memory of the short cut challenge! I know I watched it, but I'm completely blanking on the details. I have no memory of what Charlie did. I think crazy-eyed Dee gave her twins purple hair--one had purple highlights, one had purple underneath. Meh. Her styles had no chance of winning. Daniel had blondes to work with--he made one blonder than the other. Nicole made one of her twins blonde and the other twin a brunette. Apparently I was not blown away by anyone's work, but Nicole won the challenge with her rather obvious solution to the challenge. And with her win, she won immunity and was guaranteed a spot in the final three.

I had a huge problem with the whole immunity thing. The stakes are too high at this level of the competition, and to give someone immunity from a short cut challenge? That seemed a bit much. Why even bother having Nicole compete in the elimination challenge? Grrr!

ELIMINATION CHALLENGE
Ah, it was the photo shoot episode. The stylists had to work with a moody photographer to make a model look amazing for a fabricated photo shoot. Dee gave her model a really bad haircut, complete with too short bangs and lifeless strips of color. Charlie made romantic hair that easily turned into ratted out "avant guard" hair with a few strokes of the comb. Nicole? Who cares...she was immune so I'm not even going to bother talking about her. And Daniel made a few missteps by adding a red braid to his model and by making his hair too structured in the back.

Now here comes the really bad part: Daniel lost the challenge and was sent home to Dallas with his Aqua Net. Naturally Charlie won. I was surprised. I thought for sure crazy-eyed Dee would be going home. The judges described her model as having a "village idiot" look because of the super short bangs.

So now it's all down to Nicole, Dee, and Charlie. It seems that Shear Genius is just handing the prize to Charlie. If he can't beat Nicole and Dee, I'll be shocked. But at this point, I am just looking forward to the whole thing being over with!

Maybe Next Week!

Sorry! I don't have time to write a proper Shear Genius recap this week! I have far too much going on personally and professionally to fully delve into the "Friends and Family" episode of the show.

Here's a quick rundown: for the short cut challenge, the stylists had to give 6 year-olds new hairstyles for the first day of school. Everyone talked trash about everyone else's styles. Daniel made his 6 year old look like Jaclyn Smith and won the challenge. In a sign of things to come, Paulo ended up in the bottom two. Side note: did anyone else notice that Bravo put the wrong name up when they were showing Paulo? They had the little box with the name, but it said Parker, not Paulo. The minute I saw that, I knew it was going to be a bad week for my tattoo-ed favorite.

After the short cut challenge, family members of the stylists came to the salon but (in a "shocking" twist) each stylist had to do another stylists' family members' hair. Got that? Again, everyone talked trash about everyone else's styles. Charlie ended up winning and Paulo was sent packing.

Ho-hum. There was more going on than just that, but I don't have the patience to get into the "ghosts of contestants past" floor show that occurred between the short cut challenge and the elimination challenge. I will say this, though: I can't remember a time when the word "tits" (or some derivative of the word) was used as frequently as it is on Shear Genius. It's mind boggling.

Ok--I'll be a bit more witty and insightful next week. At this point, though, I'm really just waiting for the battle of the final three: Dee, Daniel, and Charlie.

Get the Winning Shear Genius Look

I'll do a full recap of last night's Shear Genius in a bit, but until then, here's how to get the winning look from Nexxus stylist Roy Teeluck:

Don’t get stuck in a mom-hair rut! Sometimes a bit of color and a new shape can make a big difference.

• Shampoo and condition with products that will protect color, while enhancing and maintaining shine. Try Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo and Nexxus Color Ensure Conditioner.

Shear Genius Recap: Doggie Style

Disclaimer: this recap won't be overly witty or clever because I am exhausted and overworked. I'm pulling at least a 50+ hour week and my brain isn't functioning all that well.

The stylists are dwindling away on Shear Genius and the bitchiness is coming out...literally.

This week's Shear Genius was a weird hodge-podge of different ideas. The short cut challenge was all about working with everyday items that can be found in the kitchen. The elimination challenge had the stylists trimming dog hair and creating hair cuts inspired by canines. It was a schizophrenic combination of Shear Genius meets Top Chef followed by Shear Genius meets Groomer Has It. I just didn't see the connection.

That said, let's break it all down a bit.

SHORT CUT CHALLENGE
Shear Genius is picking the strangest guest judges. They're either wicked ugly, have a wacky accent, or are both wicked ugly with a wacky accent. This week the guest judge for the short cut challenge, Robert Hallowell (the "Kitchen Beautician") fell into the ugly category. Despite his looks, I liked the short cut challenge. Finding beauty and styling products in your own kitchen is a fun consideration. It's something I've mentioned before on this blog and, thanks to the latest Shear Genius, something I'll have to explore a little more in depth here in kiss-and-makeup land.

Hallowell told the stylists they had to create a sculptural hair piece using only things that can be found in the kitchen like peanut butter, egg whites, honey, salt, flour, etc. Stylists had access to more exotic things like squid and beets.

The hairstyles were sloppy rats' nests. Everyone looked shellacked, sticky, and drippy. Yikes. Bad memories of Def Leopard's Pour Some Sugar On Me just sprang into my mind. Great...now I'm never going to stop singing "I'm hot, sticky sweet....from my head to my feet." Kill me now. The best of the worst was my boy Paulo (yay!) with his crazed take on a futuristic ice princess. The worst? Nicole and her blob of hair. At least she left the squid off. The whole time the models were sitting on the stools being judged, all I could think about was how sucky it was going to be for those girls to wash all that crap out of their hair. I think I'd just shave my head and start over again!

And Nicole's not-so-hot mess. My hair looks better than this when I fall out of bed in the morning...and I don't think I've ever had squid in my hair, so I guess I sorta rock!ELIMINATION CHALLENGE
The stylists had to both trim a dog's hair and then create a hairstyle inspired by the dog on the pooch's owner. While I liked the short cut challenge, I thought the elimination challenge was stupid. First: how many real hair stylists moonlight as dog groomers? Very few, I'd guess. And second: who is the world wants to look like a dog? Maybe I didn't relate to this challenge because I'm a cat person...I just don't know.

And I'm not going to waste any more time talking about it.

The winner was Dee...slightly insane-looking Dee with her shifty eyes and off-putting mannerisms. Her final style was adequate, if not boring. The final three consisted of Charlie with a wack-a-do style that made Kim Vo question the model's sanity, poor Paulo who gave his girl a mullet inspired by his own hairstyle, and...of course...the talentless Nekisa who made her girl have stripy overly flat ironed hair. I must say I panicked for a minute. Since I recently threw my support behind Paulo, I was sure I jinxed him. I really thought he was going home because, after all, America loves a shapely woman.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Nekisa finally packed her scissors and left. I so won't miss her--she should have gone ages ago. Better later than never, right?

Last night Shear Genius went to the dogs! I'll be posting my recap soon, but in the meantime, here are hints on getting the winning look from celebrity stylist Roy Teeluck from Nexxus:

A dog is a woman’s best friend! For a pooch inspired look that pops, don’t try for a literal take on your doggie’s duds. Instead, take one key feature and play on that.

Get the Winning Look

Even though there was no real winner this week on Shear Genius (click here for my recap), the judges did have a favorite look: Jacquelyn Smith's mane. Want to look like an Angel? Here's how to get the look from Roy Teeluck from Nexxus.

Sometimes you really can’t improve on the original! For a modern take on this angel’s heavenly look, make sure you build body and movement into your style.

• Start style in the shower with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Try Nexxus Therappe and Nexxus Humectress for added shine.
• Apply a body boosting mousse, like Nexxus Mousse Plus all over.Create a center part and blow-dry hair using a large, round brush to help add volume and movement. Curl the ends around the brush and hold the dryer over top for a few seconds; this will help set the wave.
• After blow drying, flip hair upside down and tousle locks with your fingers to help separate and loosen the structure of your style.
  
• Finish look by spraying entire head with a light-hold hairspray, like Nexxus 360˚ Volume.
