How to Look Like a Chola

WHAT is a CHOLA?

Chola's & Cholo's go back for hundreds of years, but the Cholo/Chola style really started in the 1940's, in Los Angeles. Funny songs like, "Lean Like a Chola" sing about the "sharpie pen" eyebrows and "thick eyeliner"! It's got big bangs, thin eyebrows, dark lined lips, big earrings, bandanas, freshly pressed Dickies pants, white tank tops, top buttoned plaid shirts, woven military style belts, and sometimes some gold name jewelry!

(My mama is half Mexican, so nobody better say anything mean....I'm not worried about here, but Youtube....is hte king machine of mean comments!)

My Nana, my mom's mom, was even born in East LA. And my great grandma was from Chihuahua, Mexico.

Gwen Stefani has represented Chola style for years!

Red EYES! No visine.

FACTS:
#1. This is the runway look from the fall L.A.M.B. collection from Gwen Stefani....
#2. I had no idea I would love RED EYELINER sooooo much!
#3. I used red lipliner on one eye....(in CHERRY from MAC)...and RED paint palette from Make-Up Forever's Flash Palette....

I love this look....it makes eyes look AMAZING! Brown eyes look gold....blue eyes will look glowing....and hazel or green are going to look like smoldering EMERALDS! (how's that for a description?!?)....
The lips are just nuded-out...my fav..with FLESHPOT from MAC (it's only available at PRO stores...so poo on them for not selling it everywhere!)...

This look is not as crazy as it seems....it looks really stunning! I love it and hope you do too!

I have loved Gwen for years....I love her funky style and that she doesn't care what people think, or at least pretends not to! ha ha ha I think that is the key, fake it til you make it, or fake your confidence until one day it shows up on your doorstep!

I have not really ever cared what people thought about how I dressed...I feel like it is an art form. I may sample some current trends, but mostly I just wear what I think is fun and makes me feel confident. Usually that is sneakers, a bunch of big jewlery, and color...even when I had friends make fun of what I was wearing...like when I would cut the necks of of turtleneck sweaters and wear them with t-shirts......my friends would later say they really thought it was cool....see how everyone has to be all negative! if they would've just said, "that's awesome kandee, that you ar brave enough to wear what we aren't brave enough to wear!"

so here's to all the brave souls that do what they want because it makes them happy, not because someone says it's cool....

Hair + Gwen Stefani = fun

I liked NoDoubt and Gwen Stefani since back when she wore dickies and wife-beater tank-tops....
I just saw her on the ELLE magazine site (where my videos are featured right now....YAY!!!!!)...and her picture popped up with some super cute, twisted, updo.....and kandee thinks: "i want that hair too....and I will show everyone else how cute it is and easy to do!"....I adapted this look so it's more "wearable" for everyone, everyday...but if you want it more wild like this...just let more pieces stick out, and twist the top uo looser towards the back....have fun!

Gwen Stefani - no doubt about it

No doubt.... (pun totally intended)....I've loved Gwen Stefani's style for a long time......I loved her boy pants and punky tank-top look forever...it suited my tomboy-ish style of dressing....In high school I work baggy pants and skate shoes...ha ha ha ha ha

Gwen's look is to timeless and old Hollywood glam......I love it!

Here's what I used to get her look.....

EYES:

MAC shadows in BRULE or BLANC TYPE (nude-ivory colors)

CONTOUR SHADOW colors......OMEGA (light beige-y brown with a slight green hue)

or charcoal brown (a medium cool brown)

LINER in CHROMALINE liner in BLACK BLACK (from MAC) or you could use the FLUID LINE

Black Mascara - L'Oreal Double Extend Tubes

LIPS: RUSSIAN RED from MAC (a cool blue-red-great on all skin tones) or for a more matte look you could RUBY WOO from MAC (it's the one with clay in it...) optional...lipliner.....

BLUSH : just for contour and slight color

HARMONY from MAC (a warm browny-pink)

ANGEL from MAC (a really really light baby pink)
