Okie Dokie, tokidoki!

Have you been anywhere near a Sephora lately? If so, you've no doubt been bombarded by cutesy products from tokidoki.

When I first saw the products, I shrugged them off. I had never used anything by tokidoki, and the graphics seemed a little too tween-ish for my taste. I figured tokidoki was all about packaging and that the actual quality of the product would be an afterthought.

But then I actually tried something by tokidoki--their Prisma Lip Gloss (in Bullets)--and my mind was changed. Apart from being a bit too fruity, I adore this lip gloss. The color is subtle, the shine is insane, and I love the way it feels--and looks!--on my lips. The applicator takes a bit of getting used to: it's a clear silicone paddle that makes lip gloss application a snap once you get used to it.

Based on my experience with Prisma Lip Gloss, I feel a bit better about the tokidoki collection and would recommend checking it out--especially if you're buying products for a slightly younger woman.

Here's what Sephora has to say about their tokidoki products:

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to add a pop of color to your palette! Whether you are an au naturel gal or glam goddess, the new criminally cute tokidoki collection exclusively at Sephora has you covered with the hottest shades of the season. From shimmering bronzer to long-lasting lip stains and eye-popping shadows, the collection offers all you need to create an irresistibly edgy new look!

Add a little mischief to your makeup bag with these colorful must-haves:

  • tokidoki Perfetto Eyeliner ($16) – Channel your inner artist and draw a temporary tattoo on the skin or expertly line the eyes with this innovative chisel-tipped liquid liner. Available in eight bold shades.
  • tokidoki Fantastico Lip Stain ($15) – This unique marker pen applicator will provide lips with intense color for all-day wear.
  • tokidoki Luminosa Powder ($22) – Achieve a luminescent, radiant glow with this highlighting powder.
  • tokidoki Cromatico Eyeshadow ($15) – Housed in signature tokidoki heart and crossbones packaging, these high-pigment shadows layer beautifully for a velvety finish. Available in 16 shades and multiple textures.
  • tokidoki Brillante Glitter Eyeliner ($14) – Make your eyes sparkle with these vibrant, glitter-infused pencil liners. Available in 14 vivid shades.
  • tokidoki Prisma Lip Gloss ($15) – Add sexy shine to lips with this non-sticky, moisturizing formula in a sweet blueberry flavor.
  • tokidoki Inferno Bronzer ($22) – A shimmering bronzer gives your face a glowing, warm color that looks stunning solo or over makeup.
Blend art and beauty for a criminally chic look with the new tokidoki collection available exclusively at Sephora stores.

More Human Than Human

Happy Monday! I use Twitter somewhat regularly and follow all sorts of people. The other day, I came across this Twitpic from Perez Hilton and had to laugh. It's just too funny...and too sad.

Photoshopping and retouching is rampant in advertising. And I'm sick of it. I'm tired of seeing PR shots for Sex and the City with Carrie and Co. looking more like aliens than middle-aged women. I'm frustrated by mascara ads where the models are obviously wearing multiple sets of fake lashes. I'm weary of being told that already impossible to attain standards of female beauty have now been replaced by perfection. I am a real woman. I cannot compete with photoshopped freaks...nor do I want to.

What's your take on photoshopped pictures? Do they annoy you? Would you rather see perfection instead of reality? Leave me a comment and let me know.

But if you're like the rest of us, you could use a few suggestions. Over the next couple of days, I'll give you some helpful suggestions. Because moms should be pampered on Mother's Day and nothing pampers them more than some beauty products or other gifts that are a little more personal in nature than a greeting card.

Thymes makes yummy scented products that any mom will appreciate. If you hurry up and order from their site, you can get free shipping on orders over $50 (and I said hurry-this deal ends tomorrow!).

Some of my faves from Thymes:

How To Look Good....When You Feel Like Crap!

I'm a relatively healthy person, but I do suffer from seasonal allergies (pollen is my arch enemy). To add to my sneezing and running eyes, I got a nasty cold last week. I spent too many days with a stuffed up nose, a raging headache, and the itchy-est, watery-est eyes ever. To put it short and sweet: I felt like crap.

But a cold/allergies can't keep a good woman down...oh no! So here we go...here are my quick tips for looking presentable when all you want to do is crawl under the covers with a box of aloe tissues shoved up your nose:

  1. After you take all your meds, be sure to exfoliate and then moisturize. The skin around my nose and lips tends to get scaly and gross when a cold/allergies strike. Exfoliate your lips by brushing them lightly with your toothbrush, and be sure to coat your irritated nasal area with moisturizer.
  2. Lay down a light foundation. When I'm not feeling great and I have to go out into the world, I don't like spend a lot of time on makeup. I've been swearing by Laura Geller's Barely There Tinted Moisturizer. It makes my skin feel good and provides a light amount of color and coverage.
  3. Add a little color. To give my skin a little lift, I swipe a bit of Pur Mineral's Mineral Glow over my cheeks and on my eyelids (instead of wearing eyeshadow).
  4. Groom the brows. Colds and allergies mean weepy eyes for me (so lovely), so spending a lot of time applying makeup that will run down my face doesn't make a lot of sense. I do, however, take a moment to make sure my brows are in place and fill in what I need to using Anastasia's Universal Brow Definer.
  5. Curl lashes and apply mascara--at your own peril! Even if I don't bust out the mascara, I'll at very least curl my lashes. Since mascara is my favorite beauty product, I tend to add a quick coat of whatever waterproof mascara I have in my kit. I just think it helps make my eyes look a little more open and a little less frightening.
  6. Keep your lips hydrated! A stuffy nose means mouth-breathing, and mouth-breathing means chapped lips. I've been using (and love!) LypSyl LypMoisturizer.
That's all I do. 6 steps to looking less awful when you're feeling like death warmed over. What do you do when you don't feel good? Do you even bother with makeup?

Time for a Dose of Pretty!

The Summer collection from NARS is set to hit store shelves today, and--as usual--everything they're offering is lovely. I cannot pull off the blue eyeshadow look, but I totally appreciate where NARS is going. And let me just add: can you imagine lashes like that? Insane!

Here's what they have to say about it:

The NARS Summer 2010 campaign was created and photographed by NARS Founder and Creative Director François Nars. Once again, as with the Spring 2010 collection, Amber Valletta sits at the forefront of the campaign. Her look transformed into François’ vision of Catherine Deneuve’s character Sèverine in the movie Belle de Jour.

“Her character is beautiful and elegant. Her look is effortless—she has an incredible inner sophistication,” says François.

Below are details on the collection, available April 15th at narscosmetics.com

Enchanted Cream Blush

A soft-peach cream blush that delivers a hint of shimmer and smooth, silky color

Budget Friendly and Ready for Spring

I don't care what the weather is doing or what the thermometer says: Spring is officially here. I, for one, am glad that winter is now just a memory. Now that we're in a new season, it's time to start thinking about new looks--new colors, new products...new everything!

If you're looking to update your makeup for the new season without breaking the bank, consider products from both mark (by Avon) and e.l.f. Here are a few of my faves from these budget-friendly brands:
Try these products from mark (available in mid-April online or through a mark rep):

  • Totally Balmed Tinted SPF 15 Lip Balm ($8): Available in four shades (a tawny cocoa, a plum, a light pink, and a pink/coral) these handy-dandy balms have a minty flavor and provide a hint of flattering color while moisturizing. A big bonus is that this also has SPF protection and includes antioxidant vitamins like A, C, and E. I am a huge fan of tinted balms, but the added SPF makes this lip balm stand out!
  • Glowdacious Illuminating Powder ($12): This pressed powder promises to brighten your skin, giving an instant glow no matter what time of the year. The compact is made up of three shades pressed into one easy to apply powder. Comes in light, medium, or dark to match any skin tone.
  • Rio Rhythms Fragrance Mist ($18): It's a good idea to lighten up your fragrance for the new season, and I like the fragrance profile of this one. It contains jasmine, coconut water, peony, gardenia and lilac, but also has undernotes of vanilla, wood and amber. It's pleasant and interesting. mark also has another scent called Rio Bikini that is a bit more fruity, but also nice.
And to really pinch your pennies (without sacrificing beauty!) try these from e.l.f. (available both online and at Target):
  • Mineral Lipstick ($5): Available in 16 shades, this lipstick hydrates your lips and provides a lasting color. The shades are subtle but pretty--perfect for the spring/summer. They contain vitamins like A and E to sooth and moisturize, and the product doesn't feel heavy like some lipsticks can.
  • Contouring Blush and Bronzing Powder ($3): This duo will help you get a healthy glow without stepping out in the sun (or spending time in harmful tanning beds). The pink gives you a flush of color while the bronze side adds contouring and can be applied any place where the sun normally hits your face. And the price will keep you smiling!
  • Studio HD Powder ($6): I love loose powder, though I rarely use it. This is a lovely little formula that helps hide fine lines while leaving your face feeling soft and looking great. Unlike pressed powder, loose powders like this make your skin feel dusted, not coated. It will help cut down shine without gunking up your skin.

Get Your Glam On!

The Oscars were a little over a week ago, but I still love seeing all the glamorous dresses and hair/makeup from Hollywood's big night. But glam isn't just for celebrities, and looking amazing doesn't have to cost you a fortune. Here are some hints to achieving the hottest looks at home, with the help of e.l.f. products. The tips come from Achelle Dunaway, Creative Director and Makeup Artist using their the wildly popular “everything’s a dollar” e.l.f. cosmetics line.

Bold, Colorful Lips – Hot pink, coral and dynamite red are ideal colors to sport with a sheer fairer-skinned face and are the equally perfect complement to a stunningly structured white gown – all the rage at the Emmys and SAG Awards. “I can see Kate Hudson, Diane Kruger and Carey Mulligan nailing this look,” says Dunaway.

PRODUCT PICKS: Mineral Lipstick in Cool Coral ($1), Studio Lip Stain in First Date ($3) or Studio Minty Lipgloss in New York City ($3)

Soft Smoky Eyes – “The smoky eye has been replaced with a refreshed, softer look,” says Dunaway. “Pretty plums and radiant browns will bring the right amount of balance for those who will wear their hair in long, Lauren Bacall-inspired styles.” Think Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz.

PRODUCT PICKS: e.l.f. Eyeshadow Duo in Berry Mix ($1) or e.l.f. Brightening Eye Shadow in Luxe ($1)

Golden Skin – Nothing screams red-carpet-gorgeous more than a soft, all-over Fergie-esque tan. “The key is keeping it only one or two shades deeper than actual skin-tone,” explains Dunaway. “Anyone wearing a daring, skin revealing dress needs a little warmth.”

PRODUCT PICKS: Mineral Glow ($8)

Peachy Cheeks – Peach tones work perfectly on all ages and skin tones. It’s a subtle look, but enhances cheek-bone structure beautifully. “Peachy tones will work on Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep alike,” says Dunaway.

PRODUCT PICKS: Studio Blush in Peachy Keen ($3)

Radiant Hollywood Glow – There is nothing a shimmer highlighter can’t do. “All of the leading ladies will have soft shimmer effects enhancing their best facial and body parts.” This is a must-do.

PRODUCT PICKS: Studio Shimmer Palette ($3) or e.l.f. All Over Color Stick ($1)

All e.l.f. products are available online and can also be found at Target.

Spring Up Your Beauty Routine

I know the winter has been a hard one for many of you--especially my readers on the east coast. Have no fear, Spring IS on the way...I promise. To get you ready for the new season, here are some Ins and Outs to keep in mind, courtesy of some of the top beauty professionals out there:

Adding Color the Right Way
Sue Devitt, Global Makeup Artist
IN: Jewel tones worn in a playful way on eyes (rich blues and purples like Sue Devitt Hydrating Marine Minerals Destination Eye Palettes in Blue Waters and Kilimanjaro)
OUT: Neutral mattes. It’s about the dimension that rich, vibrant color and properly applied shimmer creates; as opposed to a flat look with no contour.

Sam Brocato, Hair Expert
IN: Your true colors. Ask your colorist for a color that compliments your skin tone and lifestyle. If you are desperately seeking highlights, get several complimentary tones that blend together to enhance your features.
OUT: One dimensional color. Instead of going much lighter than your natural hair color, ask your colorist to embrace natural tones giving it a softer look.

Shari Gottesman, Nail Expert
IN: Vibrant and poppy, Gerbera Daisy inspired pinks, reds and oranges are replacing last year’s neon hues. Another fun trend is mood polish – colors that change from cooler to warmer tones for a whimsical effect. It’s best to wear nails short and “squoval” (square/oval) with these adventurous looks.
OUT: Mechanical, metallic blacks, navy’s and charcoals are a thing of the past, and may remain there – though its far off - the new crop of fall/winter colors are a softer, more appealing combination of beige and grey colors – or “greige.”
Spring Clean your Routine
Laura Geller, Makeup Artist
IN: Let Powder blush work double duty as shadow. Using the same color on both areas instantly pulls together your look. Choose bronzy shades in fair skin and pinks on medium and dark complexions. (Laura Geller Tropics Deluxe Collection)
OUT: A bulging makeup bag filled with a rainbow of different colors! Streamline for spring, and pull together your look with the tips above.

Ricky Croft, Self-Tanning Expert
IN: SPF, SPF, SPF! Opt for a daytime lotion (multi-task with one that offers a bit of color) like Mystic Tan Glow Daily Moisturizer SPF 15.
OUT: Baking in the sun – no one likes a leathery sunburn or early wrinkles. An added plus-- using multi-taskers will help to “spring clean” your beauty shelf.

Gavin Harwin, Infusium 23 Celebrity Hair Stylist
IN: Healthy hair! Undo the damage created by over-processing and braving the winter weather with a good leave-in treatment like Infusium 23 Repair & Renew Leave-In Treatment.
OUT: Hair that has been styled and processed to the point of no return. Getting rid of straw-like strands will instantly refresh any look.

Diane Wood, Master Barber for King of Shaves
IN: Smooth, sexy legs. A moisturizing, low-foam shave gel like Queen Of… Ta Da! Shave Gel uses tantalizing tea tree oil for a close shave and instantly refreshed skin.
OUT: Hiding beneath layers of bulky winter garb. Enjoy the warmer weather and show off some skin!

Meet the Brand: Raw Minerals

Quick: Raise your hand if you've switched from liquid foundation to mineral foundation.

I switched over when I started this blog oh-so many years ago. And so far, I've been pretty darn loyal to two mineral brands: Bare Escentuals and Pur Minerals. The market is flooded with mineral foundations and lately I've been trying out products from RAWMinerals.

Let's learn about this brand:

RAWMinerals makes a full line of mineral foundations, an active veil containing SPF, mineral glow (similar to BE's warmth), lip color, eye color, and brushes. Their products contain active botanical ingredients derived from plants to fight wrinkles, even out skin tone, and revitalize firmness. Their stuff is free from parabens and other nasty chemicals, and the company is serious about using sustainable ingredients.

It's easy to root for a company that makes products from good-for-you ingredients and that has an environmentally conscious business philosophy.

But how are the products? I've been trying out their "Discovery Kit" that comes with 2 Mineral Foundation Shades, Mineral Glow, Active Veil SPF 18 and 3 Artistry Brushes.

I blend the two shades of foundation together and I get pretty decent coverage. Their products don't feel heavy and I almost forgot I was wearing anything, which is nice. I found the mineral glow to be a little difficult to blend correctly with the accompanying brushes, but since I prefer blush anyway, I was't too upset by this. The active veil does a nice job of finishing the look, though I don't think it really helps keep shine down for a long period of time.

All in all, I find that I use RAWMinerals interchangably with my other mineral foundation products. It seems very comparable to similar products from Bare Escentuals and Pur Minerals.

My only negatives are:

  • The foundation doesn't contain SPF (though the active veil does!)
  • The makeup brushes didn't rock my world, but I'm a creature of habit and it takes alot to get me to change my brushes!
  • I'm not sure if it was the foundation or the veil, but one of the products seems to have a little extra sparkle to it, and I'm not a big fan of glittery products. I'm not saying that I look like a vampire from Twilight, but there is the tiniest bit of sparkle that doesn't thrill me.
My final say: I think RAWMinerals offers a decent product that's easy to use, flattering, and that has its corporate heart in the right place. If you're interested in switching to minerals, I'd recommend their Discovery Kit with very few reservations.

Oh! And they even have a deal for you, my fabulous readers. When you order online, enter code DISCOVERY50 and get 50% off your order. Nice!

oh you beautiful...

this is Stephanie Nielson...
she is more beautiful than she knows...

I found her story and blog from a visit to etsy.com, she was on the front page
She was cute and had an adorable love of vintagey, colorful things and little precious treasures, and a love of hats...which made me think we would be great friends, if we ever met! She has the most adorable relationship with her husband...and made me dream of finding a wonderful husband someday, that would adore me like he adored her!

I read all her blog posts (http://nieniedialogues.com/)from the beginning..and cried and cried.
She doesn't know how much she has inspired me! (not just starting a blog about my babies, but so much more, you'll have to read her blog to know! I love her!)
she is enchanting, creative, adorable, and a wonderful mama
she also was in a fiery plane crash with her husband,
where she was placed in a comma due to her severe, disfiguring burns, which covered her entire body. For months she was away at a burn center, away from her 4 precious babies that she blogged about daily, their adventures. She was the inspiration for me starting my "adventuresinkandeeland" blog about life with my little people!

she returned to her babies with an entirely different looking face, has to endure daily rituals of scrubbing her delicate flesh, sometimes until it bleeds, takes many medications, has to wear special burn "healing" suits that cover her hands...
and she said she longs to feel "beautiful"....that beauty that makes a girl feel cherished and adored...
that someone thinks she is the most beautiful thing in the world...
God says he will give us beauty for ashes...and when all these hard or difficult things have happened in our lives...he will restore that with beauty in our lives....
NOTE: if you are a guy, and happen to be reading this...please, make a point to tell that special girl in your life, everyday, that she is the most beautiful girl in the world! Every woman was designed to feel beautiful...soft hair, delicate hands, gentle features...and eyes that show you they love you...you'll never know the gift you give their heart by telling them they are beautiful...it's like setting a caged butterfly free...to soar and fly and it makes their heart feel huge!!!

Stephanie (or Nienie), is more beautiful than words or the human eye can explain! Beauty is something more than dolling up to impress people...it is more for your own eyes, than anyone knows. When you feel beautiful, it makes you walk like you are beautiful, it makes your heart feel like it got a huge hug.
And the beauty that Stephanie has, that gorgeous heart, that sparkles out into the world with through her twinkly eyes, and her kind words....and gentle spirit, make her more beautiful than any supermodel on any magazine cover.
I have seen some "beautiful" people...models, actresses...just average people...but when they spoke, or I saw how they treated people...they became uglier faster than you could imagine. Like looking at one of those old cowboy towns, where the front of the building looks all fancy, but tha back just looks all ugly!
And I have seen some people, that, the light from their eyes, and the joy in their heart....makes them look like the most gorgeously, captivating person you've ever seen!

As the wisdom from my son and his friend told me: "girls are like milkshakes....they might look all good with whipped cream and stuff....but then they might taste horrible! A girl might look cute, but then she talks....and has a bad personality and that makes her real ugly!"

I wish I could meet Stephanie Nielson, one day, I wish I could do her make-up, and make her outside feel just a fraction of how amazingly, breath-taking, her "inner" beauty is! She is one of the most beautiful women in the world to me!
May beauty shine from your heart today..and please, please, release compliments from your heart...you never know how it will make someone's day!
typed with love....from your kandee
