Beauty Feature: Mascaras Battle It Out Round 4!

It's hard to restrain a makeup junkie when there are new products coming out everyday! The good thing is that the beauty industry always keeps you on your toes. And the bad? Well, it can be a little overwhelming sometimes! Round 4 is all about "tubular" lashes! Are you ready to put those gloves on? Gloves on your lashes that is!

My Lashes: stick straight, lacking volume and length
Mission: To find a volumizing, lengthening, smudge-free, non-clumping mascara.
Round 4: Tube mascaras that coat your lashes like gloves, creating voluminous, sky-high, smear-proof lashes!

Mascara: Too Faced Lash Injection Pin Point
Rating: 7 winks
Price: $19.50 USD
Special Feature: 3D polymers build waterproof tubes around each lash with a thin brush to get every lash creating voluminous, extremely defined, long lashes.

Smudge-factor: none
Clump-factor: none
Lengthening: yes
Volume: after 2 coats
Curl: moderate
Wand: Thin brush
For: Gals who have short lashes and need length as well as separation and definition.
Overall: I really like the thin brush. It gets to every lash without making a mess on my lids. The formula seems a lot richer than the original Lash Injection. You get great definition and length but not a lot of volume or lift. It took 3 coats to make my lashes really stand out. The formula is supposed to be the same as the original but I found this one did not flake or smudge. When you have a few coats on, it takes a little while to remove with warm water but it does come off really well leaving no residue behind.
Beauty Stash Worthy: I love the brush but I could either way. I prefer a mascara that can also give me lift and lots of volume.

Mascara: Kiss Me Mascara
Rating: 8 winks
Price: $29.95 CAD
Special Feature: Water-resistant tubes that wrap around each lash for natural volume and length.

Smudge-factor: none
Clump-factor: none
Lengthening: yes
Volume: natural
Curl: yes
Wand: Medium bristle
For: Gals who like a natural look to their lashes and those that need more length than volume.
Overall: Kiss Me Mascara is the pioneer of tube mascara technology and definitely deserves kudos for being innovative. This mascara is popular among many Hollywood starlets. The mascara promises to give you natural volume and length and delivers exactly that. It doesn't make you believe you'll have the same effect as faux lashes. However, since I like my lashes on the more dramatic side this wouldn't be my first choice of mascara. The upside is that Kiss Me Mascara carries Ultra Volume Mascara for gals who want extreme volume. If you do want more volume, keep applying more coats while the formula is still moist. The rule of thumb has always been to wait until the first coat dries. When you are happy with the look let it set for 1 minute without touching. I found the brush to apply a little messy which is a surprise since the brush isn't big. All in all, it gives great length and separation.
Beauty Stash Worthy: Since cheaper versions have come out that deliver both volume and length, I probably wouldn't go out and buy another one once I'm finished. But if I have the chance to try the Ultra Volume Mascara I might!

Mascara: L'Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Technology Mascara
Rating: 9.5 winks
Price: $14.95 CAD
Special Feature: 2-in-1 mascara with nourishing base coat and tube technology mascara to give your lashes salon-like extensions that wash off with warm water. Won't be available in Canada until January 2009!

Smudge-factor: none
Clump-factor: a little
Lengthening: yes
Volume: yes!
Curl: yes
Wand: medium bristles - still able to get at hard-to-reach lashes
For: Gals who's lashes need extra nourishing and volume. Also for those that have sensitive eyes and don't want to use eye makeup remover.
Overall: Before CoverGirl LashBlast mascara came along, I was faithfully committed to L'Oreal Voluminous Water-proof mascara. Well, L'Oreal has won me back! I LOVE this mascara! It is amazing for its value. It may be a pricer drugstore mascara but it's still on the cheaper end of most high end brands. You get a 2 in 1: nourished, voluminous lashes. No smearing or flaking either. I applied a few coats and did notice a little clumping but it was easily combed out with a lash comb. I am able to get faux lashes like Lancome's Oscillation mascara, without nearly as many clumps. When I went to the launching of the mascara during L'Oreal Toronto Fashion Week, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Eddie Maleterre, Official Makeup Artist for L’Oreal Paris in Canada and L’Oreal Fashion week’s Artistic Director, did a demonstration using Double Extend Beauty Tubes. Nothing difficult but it's always cool to see how another makeup artist applies mascara. I love the fact that I no longer have to use a water-proof eye makeup remover (saves me money)! It comes off so easily with gentle pressure and warm water!
Beauty Stash Worthy: Absolutely!

Think Pink: MAKE-UP TIPS | The Importance of Proper Hygiene

During chemotherapy, the body's white blood cell count is lowered and the immune system's ability to ward off infection is reduced. When it comes to using make-up products, proper hygiene is essential on the road to recovery, as any contamination can lead to a more serious infection. Keep these tips in mind and get the make-up look you want without the risk of germs!
Always wash your hands before applying make-up.
Ok, this one is a no-brainer, but I'm sure we'll all guilty of rushing in the morning and not keeping this in mind. You can keep a hand sanitizer handy (I like Life Brand's Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer as it moisturizes and is not completely drying like most hand sanitizing brands).
Use disposable make-up applicators.

Use q-tips, sponges, eyeshadow and lip applicators. To be safe, discard after each use.
Brushes are great, but can harbour bacteria if not cleaned properly. It's fine to still use your brushes (I know once you go brush--you can never go back!), but to be safe, wash with a brush shampoo after each use, and spray with 99.9% alcohol. Let the brush hairs dry over the sink before rolling them up in your brush clutch (never put dirty/wet brushes away into your clutch - the dark and moist environment is perfect for bacteria growth).

Sharpen your eyeliner and lipliner before each use.
After sharpening, spritz this with 99.9% alcohol and give it a quick swipe with a tissue before applying it directly to lips.Replace your mascara every 3 months.

Mascara has a short life span of 3 months. Replace.
Do not try to extend past this, as you'll risk infection of the eye. Look at this as your opportunity to try out a new mascara with so many out there to choose from!

Do not pump your mascara wand!
When applying mascara, simply withdraw the brush top from the tube and avoid pumping. When you pump the brush, it pushes air into the mascara tube which promotes for bacteria growth!

To avoid contamination of your most beloved products, use a spatula and dig only the amount of product you'll need to use out of the container.
i.e. Use a make-up spatula to sliver off just the right amount of lipstick you'll need for application. Dip your disposable lip applicator into the lip product on the spatula and apply it to the lips. Once application is done, wipe the spatula clean of product and spray it with 99.9% alcohol so it's ready to go for the next time.

Avoid cross-contamination by not sharing make-up or make-up tools.
This is a time to be selfish - your make-up is all your own!!

Beauty Review: Sarah Jessica Parker Is Lovely

No matter how many roles Sarah Jessica Parker plays I will always think of her as Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. Who didn't have a little bit of Carrie in them? Well, now you can take a little piece of Sarah Jessica Parker with you by spritzing on her utterly feminine, ultra chic fragrance, Lovely ($32.50 - $67 USD). And like her character as Carrie, this scent is classic and timeless. Inspired by her love of layering scents the fragrance is a blend of Fresh Mandarin, Bergamot, Rosewood, Lavender, Apple Martini, Patchouli, Paper Whites, Orchid, Cedar, White Amber, Musk Woods. At first spritz, I found the fragrance a little strong but let it settle on the skin and it really is lovely. Every time I wear it, I feel sophisticated. The scent doesn't fade away like other fragrances.

What makes it even more lovely is that for a limited time and while quantities last you will receive the Blockbuster hit movie and collector's item, Sex and the City with your purchase of Lovely at your nearest Sears location! Canadian residents only - sorry! Hurry and purchase Lovely and receive the DVD before it runs out!

Scents and Sensibility

Perfume is one of the most personal beauty products out there. Your signature scent may smell amazing to you, but be completely repellent to those around you. When it comes to fragrances, you have to know what you're doing. Not only do you need to find the scent that suits you best (and there are so many fragrances on the market it can make you a little crazy!), you also need to know what type of product to buy, and how best to wear it.

Thanks to some advice from Allure magazine, here's all you need to know about the world of fragrance.

SELECTING YOUR FRAGRANCE

  • First know that finding the right perfume takes time. You need to figure out how a product wears over a period of time. There are different scent "notes" that require a certain degree of consideration...the fragrance world is almost as confusing as the winery world! I am by no means an expert on perfume, so you may want to check out a few scent-centric blogs out there to learn the lingo.
  • Don't bother trying out scents you don't like. I am not a big fan of floral scents, so I wouldn't want to waste my time sniffing rose-scented perfume. Let the salesperson know of any preferences (likes/dislikes) you know you have.
  • When shopping for a scent, don't spray directly on your skin. First try the scent on a test strip. Let the product dry a minute and then sniff it. Sniff it again after a few minutes to see how to scent changes and opens up. After 10 minutes, you should have a feel for the full range of elements in the fragrance.
  • Clear your nose and your head! Sniffing coffee beans between fragrances helps to neutralize your "palette" for lack of a better word.
  • Once you have two to four favorite scents picked out, try them out on your skin (on your pulse points--different areas of your arm) to see how the fragrance reacts to your personal biological makeup.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to find "the one." You want to let the scent open up on your skin for about 10 minutes. If you like the way it smells, you're all set. If not, it's back to the spraying and sniffing.
KNOW WHAT YOUR BUYING
  • Perfume: Perfumes contain the largest percentage of perfume oil, about 20 to 25%. Because of this, perfumes are the longest lasting and most expensive. They come in small quantities and should be applied with care. One or two drop will last 8 to 12 hours.
  • Eau de Parfum: This usually comes in a spray form and contains 15 to 18 percent perfume oil and will last 6 to 8 hours.
  • Eau de Toilette: This is the least expensive and least concentrated formula. If you want just a light scent, this is your best bet since it only contains about 4 to 10% perfume oil.
  • Cologne: I always think colognes are just for men, but they're for both genders! They are more diluted than perfumes and can be used as a spray or a splash.
GET THE MOST WEAR-TIME FOR YOUR BUCK
Extend the life of your favorite perfume by following these tips:
  • Wear the right amount. If you're wearing a perfume, you only need a drop or two. For eau de parfum, no more than three sprays; no more than four sprays of eau de toilette, and no more than six sprays of cologne. You don't want to over do the amount of fragrance you're wearing because doing so can be offensive to others.
  • Know that you are not a good judge of how much you have on. After a bit, you get used to your fragrance and are desensitized to it. As such, it's easy to over do it. Just stick to the number of sprays listed above and you should be ok.
  • Apply fragrance to your pulse points (wrists, inner elbows, neck, behind ears, behind knees).
  • Store your fragrance wisely. Heat and light will breakdown the compounds in your product, so store it in your bedroom or linen closet. Perfumes last anywhere from one to eight years after opening, depending on the scent.

Beauty Feature: Mascaras Battle It Out Round 3!

Round 3 of "Mascaras Battle It Out!" is a special edition featuring the newest innovations in mascaras! Gimmicky products peak my interests for a second, but I always go back to what works. Some may argue that oscillating or vibrating mascaras are the future of mascara, but you don't know until you try them!

My Lashes: stick straight, lacking volume and length
Mission: To find a volumizing, lengthening, smudge-free, non-clumping mascara.
Round 3: Oscillating, vibrating mascaras that do all of the above!

Mascara: Estee Lauder TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara
Rating: 6 winks
Special Feature: Brush vibrates to give you volume, length, and curl.
Smudge-factor: none
Clump-factor: none
Lengthening: yes especially after 2 coats
Volume: moderate
Curl: yes
Wand: Full vibrating bristles that tapers at the end to reach all the little lashes. As soon as you twist the wind the vibrations start.
For: Gals who want long, natural looking lashes and hate all the mess from wiggling the wand back and forth.
Overall: My rating is mediocre but I actually don't mind the mascara - it's the price. My lashes on the right eye are super long and separated but not very voluminous. The first coat is natural looking but I wanted a more dramatic effect. After swiping on 4 coats, my lashes were a little more dramatic. Although, I didn't like how wiry my lashes looked up close. The vibrations definitely help with the lift and separation but I hate how long it takes to apply the mascara. To ensure every lash is coated, you have to brush the wand up slowly. You'll need to work in 10 extra minutes every morning to rock this mascara!
Beauty Stash Worthy: I've tried non-vibrating mascaras that give you the same effect plus the volume, but the vibrations really do help lift my lashes at the root. And that's where it's most important - for me at least! Would I pay $40 + for another mascara? Probably not.

Mascara: Lancome Oscillation Mascara
Rating: 7 (10!) winks
Price: $39 CAD
Special Feature: 7000 oscillations per minute vibrating Powermascara.

Smudge-factor: none
Clump-factor: YES!
Lengthening: very
Volume: yes - extreme!
Curl: yes
Wand: Thin, rubber-like bristles that get at every lash. Press the button on the cap before pulling wand out of tube.
For: Gals who love clumpy, faux lashes without having to move the wand back and forth.
Overall: Ok, did you see my left eye?? Seriously, this is only 2 coats! The Estee Lauder version took 4 coats to stand out. The only time my lashes have ever looked this extreme are when I apply fake lashes! I gave this a 7 because from far away or in photos my lashes looked fabulous! But up-close it was just a clumpy mess! To get the clumps out I had to use a razor sharp eyelash brush to comb through it. The oscillating brush definitely makes a difference with lift and coating each lash. However, the tiny rubber-like bristles and oscillation don't seem to do a good job of separating and de-clumping. At the unveiling of this mascara, Jean-Louis Guéret, THE designer of all Lancome brushes was lovely enough to demonstrate the motion on his lashes! Again, the whole process is really slow - start at the root and slowly work your way up. I was also told I wouldn't need an eyelash curler but I definitely do. The formula seems so heavy it weighs down my barely-there lashes. I would have given it a higher rating if it weren't for the clumping, but the faux lash effect has got me! If you're going to come out with an innovative mascara with a high price your lashes better look dramatically different!
Beauty Stash Worthy: Uhm, yes I hate clumps but YES I love how my lashes look after! Isn't this so wrong? I'll sacrifice a few minutes to comb out the clumps! Would I pay $40+ for another one? If it'll save me money from buying fake lashes and glue why not!

Estee Lauder TurboLash Mascara is available in Canada October 2008 and Lancome Oscillation Mascara won’t be available until December 29, 2008 and will be sold at The Bay exclusively for one month. On January 30, 2008 it will be available everywhere else at all regular Lancôme counters.

Have you tried either mascara? Love it? Hate it?

Think Pink: MAKE-UP TIPS | Taking Care of Skin and Nails

During cancer treatment, women may experience increasing dryness in the skin. Here are some Think Pink Make-up Tips to keep the skin supple during this temporary change:

1. Avoid cleansing products that have alcohol as an active ingredient.
Products that contain alcohol tend to dry out the skin and will be too harsh for temporarily sensitive skin.

2. Moisturize temporarily drier skin.
Choose a non to lightly scented, water-based lotion and massage it into the skin. Use gentle and upward massage motions to apply lotion on the face. Also, opt for a lotion that has an SPF (of at least) 30 to shield against the harmful rays of the sun.

3. Even better - stay out of the sun!
For a sun-bathing obsessed society, it may be tough to shack up during the summer months, but surely we have all heard the correlation of sun-bathing and cancer. During recovery, when skin is particularly sensitive, it is best to cover up and avoid the sun. To still get the look without cooking under the sun, use make-up products (i.e. bronzing creams and powders are any girl's best friend) to get a healthy glow on!

4. Moisturize (and don't cut!) your cuticles.
Since the immune system is weakened during treatment, avoid cutting your cuticles as any cut can lead to infection. Instead, apply a cuticle cream to keep cuticles soft and use a sterile instrument to gently push them back. Do your own manicures, but if you do go to get a professional manicure done, bring your own sterile tools for use.

Pink Product of The Day: Stila Lip Glaze Grapefruit!

Only 2 more days left in October and I'm still Thinking Pink! But just because November is around the corner doesn't mean we should forget about breast cancer awareness! Today's pink product of the day is another new favourite - Stila Lip Glaze in Grapefruit ($22 USD)!

This pretty frosted pink ultra shiny gloss is just lovely! The shimmery accents give the lips a super plush and luxe finish. What I love about Stila Lip Glaze glosses is that even the sheerest of shades still delivers colour to the lips! Grapefruit is a go-to shade for any occasion, any outfit, and any makeup look. And the scent is just yummy! Like I've said before in previous reviews, it is a thicker gloss that is a tad sticky, but the shine and colour lasts and lasts!

Rest Your Weary Eyes, Part 2

Yesterday I told you about eyeSlices, a new product to relax your eyes. Today I'm going a little higher-tech with the Eye-Soothe Tension Relieving Mask.

What it does: Warm/cool massaging eye mask soothes away tension and pain. The Eye-Soothe mask uses Air Inflation Technology to gently massage around eyes, forehead and sinuses, alleviating pressure and working away stress. Removable gel insert can be chilled to provide a gentle, cooling sensation or warmed for soothing heat therapy. 15-minute auto shutoff timer. Includes storage pouch. Uses three AA batteries (not included).

What I liked: The minute you put this thing on, you're forced into relaxation. The mask provides instant darkness and encourages you to close your eyes, sit back, and let your mind drift away. Air inflates around the eyes providing varying amounts of pressure. The building up and then the releasing of the air pressure provides stress relief and feels pretty good. After using the mask, I felt relaxed and revived.

What I didn't like: The air filling up and then releasing in the mask is a little noisy, which could harsh my mellow if I let it.

Overall: Not bad! I think this would feel good if I had a sinus headache, because it does make me feel better when I'm not suffering from congestion or head pains.

Price/availability: Available at Brookstone for $50.

Beauty Feature: Mascaras Battle It Out Round 2!

Welcome to Round 2 of "Mascaras Battle It Out!" Lash-challenged sisters like me will try anything to get va-va-voom lashes. How many times have we snatched up a mascara claiming to give you bigger than big lashes only to be disappointed? From the moment I started wearing mascara, it has been my quest to find the ultimate one. Today's Round is all about colossal, bodacious, and extreme mascaras!

My Lashes: stick straight, lacking volume and length
Mission: To find a volumizing, lengthening, smudge-free, non-clumping mascara.
Round 2: Extreme volume mascaras with big brushes

Mascara: Too Faced Lash Injection
Rating: 3.5 winks
Price: $19.50 USD
Special Feature: Unique elastic polymers that curl, fatten and stretch far beyond the natural lash.

Smudge-factor: yes
Clump-factor: no
Lengthening: no
Volume: yes, but no wow factor
Curl: no
Wand: Giant brush
For: Gals who want extreme volume and want a mascara that washes off with water.
Overall: Not a fan. I had high expectations from magazine reviews, but was highly disappointed. The most foulest, chemically smell came out as soon as I opened it. I also found the formula to be really dry - another dud? It took me several coats to lengthen my lashes and to create any kind of volume. The more coats I applied, the drier my lashes looked. It also smudged and flaked throughout the day. It did remove easily with warm water, but who really cares.
Beauty Stash Worthy: Not for this Makeup Junkie!

Mascara: Benefit BADgal Lash Mascara
Rating: 6.5 winks
Price: $19 USD
Special Feature: Rich, sexy formula and oversized brush builds thick, beautiful and bodacious lashes.

Smudge-factor: a little
Clump-factor: none
Lengthening: yes
Volume: yes
Curl: yes
Wand: Oversized brush
For: Gals who love big lashes and big brushes
Overall: I really liked BADgal Plum Mascara for making the colour of the eyes pop. The original mascara does give you the volume, but to really make my lashes stand out I had to apply a few coats especially to get it really black. I also found the formula to be a little dry and not rich like it claims. The oversized brush made the application messy and it was hard to reach my smaller lashes. Comparing it to cheaper brands, I find it offers the same effect. I would have given it 7 winks but it smudged a little. The good thing is that you can layer on more without clumps. All in all, you get a nice volume on the first coat but to get it "bodacious", you need a few extra coats.
Beauty Stash Worthy: If you're a fan of Benefit's fun names and cute packaging then sure. But for me, I'd go with a cheaper version that gives you the same effect.

Mascara: Maybelline the Colossal Volum' Express Mascara
Rating: 7.5 winks
Price: $7.99 CAD
Special Feature: Lash-boosting collagen formula and unique Mega Brush plump lashes one by one for 9x the volume in just one coat.

Smudge-factor: none
Clump-factor: no
Lengthening: yes
Volume: definitely
Curl: after 2 coats
Wand: Super thick bristle
For: Gals who love extra volume with virtually no clumping and don't want to spend a fortune.
Overall: It's a good mascara for its value. The word "colossal" invites big expectations though. It gives lashes beautiful volume, length, and doesn't clump but I see no difference from the original Volum' Express Turbo Boost Mascara. The fat wand did make a mess on my lids but that's a given with big wands. I would say that the packaging is pretty "colossal"! I hate extra packaging - what ever happened to eco-friendly? I would have given it an 8 if it weren't for the packaging and the "colossal" expectations.
Beauty Stash Worthy: For the cheap price you can't go wrong.

Think Pink: MAKE-UP TIPS | Applying False Eyelashes

As we saw in a previous Think Pink installment, sparse eyelashes are a common physical change when undergoing treatment. Although false eyelash application is not recommended during recovery (due to the harsh adhesives), I know many women still prefer the look, particularly for those special occasions. (Just to be sure, always consult your doctor prior to application.)

Falsies do take a little bit of practice and patience to apply, so don't fret if you don't master it on your first attempt! If you do get the go-ahead to wear them, try these handy steps for false eyelash application:1 . Use your black eyeliner and draw a line right into the top lash line. Make sure there are no gaps between the eyeliner and where the natural lash line occurs, as this will help camouflage the band of the false eyelash strip.

2. Place a mirror on a table in front of you so that you're looking downward at it. This will give you the best vantage point to apply the lashes. (If you try to apply lashes using a mirror straight in front of you, tilt your head back slightly to apply the lashes. Looking downward and revealing a tiny bit of eyelid will give you a better idea of where the lash should be placed in order to master the placement of the band - and that's key to falsies not looking so false!)

3. Pour a tiny bit (literally, one drop!) of glue (see pic at right) onto a piece of cardboard and let it sit for about 1 minute (we want the glue to become slightly tacky so it adheres better).

4. Take a make-up brush and use the bottom (non-brush) end of it to apply a thin layer of the tacky glue to the band of the fake eyelashes (see pic at left). Concentrate a tiny bit more glue on the outer and inner corner to help anchor these areas of the eyelash strip. Remember to keep the strip of glue to a thin line and wipe off any excess - otherwise, you'll end up with a sticky mess on your lids!

5. Place the band of the false eyelashes directly along the lashline, right at the base of the lashes so that they blend with your own natural lashes.

6. Allow 2-3 minutes to dry (or watch for the lash glue to turn clear).

7. Apply a curling mascara to bring the lashes all together, but avoid using an eyelash curler.

To remove falsies:
  • Saturate a cotton pad with a gentle eye make-up cleanser.
  • Hold the pad against the eye for about 30 seconds to 1 minute to loosen the eyelash glue.
  • Lightly tug at the outer corner of the eyelash (it should not require a lot of force to remove them). If the falsies are still pretty locked into the lash line, use more eye make-up remover with a cotton pad to loosen more of the eyelash adhesive. Try again and gently pull at the rest of the false eyelash strip until it is completely removed.
TIP
If you're running into trouble applying the full strip, cut each band in half and apply the half-falsies to the outer eyelashes. The shorter strip will be much easier to apply and also gives that coveted doe-eyed look! Make sure to add a couple of coats of mascara to migrate the natural lashes with the falsies and bat away!

Rest Your Weary Eyes, Part 1

I don't know about you, but after working all day under florescent lights, staring at a computer screen, my eyes feel stressed out and tired. Over the next two days, I'll share information about two new products designed to leave your eyes feeling refreshed. Today: eyeSlices.

What they do: eyeSlices are innovative eye treatment pads that combine the natural essence of nature with bio-innovation to bring about an all-in-one solution to all common eye concerns. eyeSlices is a global first in cryogel polymer technology. These dermal delivery eye masks reduce the appearance of red eyes, dark circles under eyes, tired eyes, wrinkles and puffy eyes within 5 minutes of use. These professional spa and in-home anti-aging eye skin treatments lock in moisture and are unique in that they provide an instant cooling sensation without a fridge and are re-usable!

What I liked: eyeSlices are a snap to use. You put them over your eyes for a few minutes, lay back, and relax. They feel cool and soothing and they can be used over and over again. According to the packaging, they're even better when you store them in the fridge (I tried that and I thought it was a tad too cold for my liking!) and they'll last about two weeks or so. Mine are in good shape almost three after opening. They leave the skin around my eyes looking brighter and more vibrant.

What I didn't like: nothing. They're great! They do exactly what they say they will. The only thing I am not crazy about is that they're not yet widely available for retail (but I'm sure that will change soon!).

Overall: What's not to like?

Buying information: Like I said, they are just coming to the states. A case with a pair of eyeSlices costs $19.99; refills run $14.99. If you are interested in ordering click here or contact EyeSlices USA at 908-769-4350.

Think Pink: MAKE-UP TIPS | Brow Know-How

I originally posted this on my blog at artistrhi.com to highlight the importance of a great brow for all women. A great brow helps to frame the face, give us expression and polish our overall look. For women undergoing treatment, the loss of eyebrow hairs is a common physical side effect that can easily be managed with a few of the make-up tips we will discuss here.

The shape to aim for should closely follow your own natural shape (i.e. for the most flattering look, you don't want to completely alter your brow shape!) Find a picture of yourself before treatment and use this as a reference to achieve a natural looking filled-in brow.

Use these steps as a guideline to obtain a universally flattering brow look:

1. Take an eyebrow pencil (use one that's long enough to span the bottom of the nostril to the top of the brow) and hold it vertically, straight against the edge of the nostril up to the browbone. Use this as a reference point as to where brows should begin and draw a light dot with your eyebrow pencil to mark the area on the browbone.

2. Now, move the pencil in a parallel direction towards the outer-edge of the iris, while still holding it in a vertical direction. This is the approximate area where the highest part of the eyebrow--the arch--should occur. Draw another tiny dot on the browbone to mark this point of the eyebrow.

3. Lastly, take the pencil and hold the bottom part of it against the side of the nostril, while tipping the the top portion to make it line up against the outer edge of the eye. The eyebrow should end where the top of the pencil hits the browbone. Place a final dot here to act as a reference as to where the brow should end.
MORE TIPS
  • Choose a waxy eyebrow pencil to keep a filled-in brow more natural looking. A pencil that is too creamy will appear too dark and too fake (think of those tattoed eyebrows) and may draw the wrong kind of attention towards the brow area.
  • Use a light-handed, feathery stroke to mimic tiny eyebrow hairs. Follow the flow of traffic and draw in the direction of hair growth (i.e. Caucasian brows tend to grow straight across, Asian brows tend to grow upward at the inner corner, across in the middle, and downward at the outer corner of the brow). Using an eyebrow pencil with more of a waxy texture will keep the application light-handed.
  • Use a matching eyeshadow or brow powder to blend and set your filled brows.
  • Can't get the shape right? Never fear! Anastasia, a Make-up Junkie favourite, offers brow kits that include brushes, brow powders and stencils in different sizes to help achieve your best brows yet!

Rather than seek trendy colors or drastic cuts, Lopez was recently seen showing off her shiny brunette curls at the 2008 Oscars. This is a wonderful update from Lopez’s previous experiments with highlights. Her classic look showed that she truly possess a timeless beauty few celebrities can match. Off the red carpet, the new mom keeps it casual.

'Tis the Season...Almost

What in the world is going on? It's not even Halloween yet, and already Christmas merchandise is creeping into retail stores. The economy is in the toilet and people are panicking about money. Consumer sales are down, so retailers are trying to push the holiday seasons up...so we'll spend more money than we planned, no doubt.

Whatever.

If you're starting to make your holiday wish list or if you're already starting your holiday shopping, here are some beauty treats to add to your list from the beauty gurus at Sephora:

SUGAR PLUM FAIRIES
From brilliantly bold to barely there, monochromatic shades of purple reign during the holidays. A pinky pout will keep the look sweet, while smoldering violet eyes will amp up sex appeal for those stolen moments under the mistletoe.

Korres’ Sugar Plums Limited Edition Kit has arrived just in time for the party season. With a plum lip butter, a plum cherry lip gloss, and a plum sunflower and evening primrose shimmering eyeshadow, this kit creates any look for a girls night out from dark gothic to a subdued sophisticated palette.

Not strictly limited to lips and lids, lashes come out and play in this passionate color story, flaunting hints of the hue. Benefit’s Bad Gal Plum Mascara thickens and lengthens your lashes with this beloved color and “BAD-itude”.

THE GLITTERATI HAS ARRIVED
Killer heels and fab frocks aren’t your only arsenal for resembling the glitterati. Now you have metallic shades with glitters galore that will instantly take your look from zero to 100, especially when sported all over.

The key to this look starts with bareMinerals Extreme Glimmers, a five-piece collection that contains three new high-impact, extreme glimmers that can be worn together or alone, a new customized Extreme Glimmers Brush for expert application, and a starter size bareVitamins Prime Time Eyelid Primer.

For a sparkly lash line to match you sparkling lids, turn to Sephora’s Electro Liners that are micro-infused with glitter. Our favorites for this season are Mauve Electro (matte plum), Electro Night (metallic midnight blue) and Metal Electro (metal dark grey) because they’ll have you ready to party in sync with the latest color trends.

To seal the deal on this scintillating look, opt for Kat Von D for Sephora’s Lightning Lip Gloss. With 11 glitzy shades to choose from, this lip gloss adds dimension to your pucker with a sparkle-inflected sheer gloss. Designed by the star of TLC’s LA Ink, Kat Von D, the gloss works on top of lip color or on its own and brings an edgy glamour to your face.

If you’re in search of something less flashy, we have an alternate method of shining. Dior’s Black Diamond Diamond-Effect Powder for Face and Décolleté is the perfect amount of shimmer for any woman that loves to indulge in luxury. Cased in a Dior-logo engraved compact with crystal-shaped gems, this finishing powder illuminates the complexion with an exclusive formula that features an intense concentration of mother-of-pearls. Sweep your face and décolleté with this powder to create an instant festive glow.

HEAVEN-SCENT
Even if you aren’t vacationing in any place exotic this season, you can still smell as if you did. TOCCA Beauty’s Brigitte is their latest fragrance inspired by screen siren and icon Brigitte Bardot. The perfume takes you to a scene of breezy bike-riding in the south of France filled with the intoxicating scent of the spice market in Marseille. With top notes of ginger, rhubarb papaya, middle notes of Moroccan rose, iris and saffron, and bottom notes of sandalwood and musk, Brigitte evokes images of baskets filled with rose petals and of course, the beauty herself.

I'll be updating you with more holiday-list worthy beauty products each week. I can't believe I'm already thinking about this!

Beauty Feature: Mascaras Battle It Out!

Ding! Ding! Ding! Welcome to Round 1 of my mascara feature "Mascaras Battle It Out!" With so many mascaras on the market claiming to be the best how does a makeup junkie pick the right one? I've taken it upon myself to test some of the hottest and top selling mascaras - oh the torture! Keep in mind, results may vary and the outcomes were based on my experience only.

My Lashes: stick straight, lacking volume and length
Mission: To find a volumizing, lengthening, smudge-free, non-clumping mascara.
Round 1: Eco-friendly, mineral based mascaras

Mascara: L'Oreal Bare Naturel Mascara in Blackest Black
Rating: 8 winks
Price: $13.89 CAD
Special Feature: Mineral-enriched mascara, 86% natural-origin ingredients, shine-enhancing minerals, and paraben- and fibre-free.
Smudge-factor: no
Clump-factor: no even after 5 coats!
Lengthening: yes after 2 coats
Volume: yes after 2 coats
Lift: yes after 2 coats
Wand: Thick naturally-based soft bristles
For: Gals who are eco-conscious and want a natural but buildable mascara.
Overall: I liked this mascara. The first coat has a natural effect but give it another few coats and you have full, dramatic long lashes. I tried 5 coats and was delighted it didn't clump! The formula also gives the lashes a nice rich sheen. Water-proof formulas seem to be the only mascaras that don't smudge on me. Bare Naturel is not water-proof but there was no smudging even after a nap and a yoga workout. The bonus is that it's a nourishing, mineral-enriched mascara so you can feel good about putting something natural on your lash.
Beauty Stash Worthy: Yes. Eco-friendly, decent price, and a versatile mascara - go from natural to dramatic.

Mascara: Tarte Lash Hugger Natural Mascara
Rating: 9.5 winks
Price: $18 USD
Special Feature: A natural eco-friendly mascara housed in a metalized tube composed of post-consumer recycled aluminum.

Smudge-factor: no
Clump-factor: no
Length: yes
Volume: yes
Curl: yes
Wand: Medium bristle
For: Gals who are eco-friendly, have sensitive eyes and want all the lengthening, volumizing, and clump-free benefits in one mascara.
Overall: I love this mascara and it's not even water-proof which in the past is the only thing that gave my lashes lift. It definitely hugs the lashes. From the first coat my lashes were lifted, lengthened, voluminous, and clump-free. The effect is more natural but just swipe on a few more coats and you get bold lashes without any clumping! The pigment is also a rich black that leaves a glossy sheen on the lash. More brownie points for not smudging. I love that it uses natural ingredients such as water, olive esters, rice bran wax, carnuba wax, and mineral pigments. The recycled aluminum tube is a bonus so you can feel good about protecting the environment. It got 1.5 points more than L'Oreal Bare Naturel because of the recycled aluminum tube and looked lovely right from the first swipe.
Beauty Stash Worthy: Yes! I love Tarte products so I'd be willing to pay a little more. It's rare that I find a mascara I love right away!

Have you tried these mascaras? Love them? Hate them?

Think Pink: MAKE-UP TIPS | How to Maximize Sparse Eyelashes

Throughout the month of October, Make-up Junkie has been featuring the latest beauty products that are both helping to benefit the lives of those affected by cancer while supporting the research for a cure. Aside from the products out there to help us all get gorgeous, there are some particularly useful make-up artist tips for women undergoing treatment that we will highlight in this series to keep us Thinking Pink!

With chemotherapy, come a host of appearance-related side effects, including hair loss from the eyelashes and eyebrows. These changes in physical appearance are some of the most challenging to deal with, as they are some of the most apparent to us when we look in the mirror. Rest assured that along the road to recovery, the important thing is your health and that these physical changes are only temporary. In the meantime for women concerned with sparse eyelashes, there are simple make-up tips to mimic the effect of a full lash line and help pump up the lash volume!

"How do I make the most of my spare lashes?" is a very common question I hear from women undergoing treatment. As the immune system is weakened and the body is more prone to infection, it is not recommended that women wear false eyelashes. The ingredients used in the eyelash glue can be too harsh for the body at this time and when the eyelashes are removed, they also risk pulling at what remains of the natural eyelashes. Instead, save those falsies for a special occasion and try these alternatives that help give the eye the definition a lash line provides:
1. Use eyeliner.

Apply eyeliner on the top lash line, drawing it thinner on the inner corner and gradually thicker as it approaches the outer corner (see top diagram above). This technique mimics the way the eyelashes would frame the eye - shorter hairs on the inner corner that gradually increase in length as they approach the outer corner of the eye. Eyeliner applied in this way will help to open up the eye and make it appear larger. (Who doesn't love that?!) To add even more depth, smudge the eyeliner slightly upwards while still keeping the line thinner on the inner corner.

NOTE: Try to avoid using eyeliner on the inside rim of the eye, as this tends to make the eye look smaller and can be harmful for those with sensitive eyes. To still get the fully lined look, use eyeliner just right below the lower rim, on the outer third of the bottom lashline (as in bottom right diagram above). Smudging this line will also create the illusion of more dimension around the eye and make your eyes pop by framing the whites of your eyes!
2. Try to avoid the eyelash curler, but use a volumizing and washable mascara formula to enhance lashes.
I love eyelash curlers, but unfortunately, long-term repeated use of one can make eyelashes brittle, especially at a time when they are more prone to breakage and fall-out. Instead, skip the curler and try a curl-enhancing or volumizing mascara in a washable formula to add emphasis to the lashes.

TIPS:
  • I know we all love our waterproof make-up, but as durable as waterproof is, it can also be tough to remove. With sensitive eyes and lashes, a washable formula would still help achieve the fuller lash look but spare you the struggle that removing waterproof mascara usually entails.
  • Avoid using an eyelash curler once mascara has been applied - the eyelashes may stick to the curler and you may risk losing some strands!
  • Use an eyelash primer and mascara combination formula to maximize your lashes. (L'oreal's Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara--that Make-up Junkie has been highlighting from Fashion Week--looks like the perfect product to try for this!)
3. Make sure to conceal under-eye circles.
Think of it this way: whenever you do eye make-up remember it's not just the eyelid area that needs tending to - the eyebrows (we'll discuss these in our next installment!) and the undereye area all do their parts to frame the eye. These areas need proper make-up attention as well to get an overall polished look; a smoky eye would never look proper without some undereye concealer to camouflage any dark circles! Use a colour correcting concealer to brighten any dark areas and then blend it all in with your skin tone colour concealer. Try a pink concealer to brighten fair skin tones, a peachy concealer for medium skin tones, and an orange concealer for darker skin tones. Use your concealer sparingly - just in the areas that need attention. Once camouflaged, a concealed undereye area will help to brighten the entire face and highlight your beautifully lined eyes!
