How To Fix Broken Eyeshadows

cosmetic doctor to the counter...stat!
here's what you need on the eyeshadow operating table....
broken shadows
ziplock or any plastic bag
butter knife or spoon
rubbing alcohol (70% is fine, or if you can get 90% or higher it will just dry faster)
a squeeze bottle to put the alcohol in (this is optional..just makes it easier)
a coin (a quarter is the perfect size)
pieces of a cut up t-shirt or fabric (you can use a tissue but it doesn't work as well)

In the video I used matte eye shadows....this technique works for shimmery, sparkly, or matte....
actually it works best for matte shadows...shimmery ones have larger particles mixed with smaller ones....this makes them more fragile and much more breakable...
this works the same for matte or shimmer...they are all pressed the same way in the factory....just the sparklier ones will always be more fragile...

This is the quickest and simpliest way to fix your eyeshadows, blushes, face powders, anything powdery in a compact!

So here's to your Operation Save A Shadow!!!

Experimenting...

Hey everyone!

First off, I wantd to thank all my readers (you!) for your support - this blog has more than 100 followers now, and I hugely appreciate all your comments and your visits here!!

Second, I will be in London during the next week, to see the Phantom of the Opera, try some real English Afternoon Tea at a fancy hotel, and go shopping of course :D! So don't be surprised if I don't get to post next weekend!

Today, I just experimented a little with a multi-colored crease, but I guess it will take me some more practice to be content with my results (:.. I used Clair de Lune on the lid, with Gesso in the inner and outer corners. Then I drew a line with black kohl following the shape of my crease and winging it out. I started with Passionate in the inner corner, Grape in the middle and added some Carbon above the kohl line and in the outer corner. Sorry for the lashes, they suck but as I am not wearing any eyeliner, I didn't want to glue on falsies...

Product List
MAC Bare Canvas, MAC Clair de Lune, MAC Gesso, Maybelline Expression kohl in black, MAC Passionate, MAC Grape, MAC Carbon, CG Lash Blast

Lakshmi Menon in Fall 2009's Make-up Trends [Alexander Wang]

"A little bit androgynous, a little bit masculine" is how makeup artist and Shiseido artistic director Dick Page described the look at Alexander Wang's show Saturday. "It's a bit sexy, but a bit tough as well," said Page, who achieved this by applying Makeup Stick Cream Foundation in a shade or two darker than the model's skin tone to contour the cheeks, before dusting the face with Translucent Loose Powder, for a "very matte finish."

Page skipped the mascara, but lined the eyes with Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Brown and applied Silky Eye Shadow in Granite Stone for a murky effect.

Lips were neutral and monochrome—painted with a blend of Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Brown and Perfect Rouge Lipstick in Spiced Cream.

Lakshmi Menon in Fall 2009's Make-up Trends [Diane Von Furstenburg]

“We’re doing a monochromatic, nomadic woman,” said M.A.C Cosmetics makeup artist James Kaliardos, who added that “Sudanese women” inspired the beauty look at Diane von Furstenberg Sunday afternoon.

“We’re shading the face with natural tones,” he said, “and there’s a round, light, smoky eye.” He applied a M.A.C Omega Eye Shadow hue to top and bottom eyelids to lend rounded definition to the eyes. On the cheeks, he went with a M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Pearl and brushed M.A.C Malt Eye Shadow onto the edges of the lips “to kind of finish off [the face].

Lakshmi Menon in Fall 2009's Make-up Trends [Tibi]

Inspired by the color-pop prints and peacock solids in Tibi's Fall 2009 line, Makky turned the makeup to a decade when optimism was king, and neon colors ruled. Yes, that would be the 80's. "The look is very Christy Turlington circa Vogue in the late 80's, said Makky. "When bright blue eye shadow was really in." To make the look very fresh and modern, and not too Barbie, he cut off the end of the eye color for a very graphic, square shape.
Makky used M.A.C's new turquoise shade for fall, blended with true blue M.A.C Eye Shadow in Electric Eel on the top lid and squared off at the ends, with a cobalt blue shade beneath the lower lash lines. For concentrated color, use M.A.C Paint Pot in Painterly underneath. "It's a cream shadow that dries in a minute and really pops every color you put on top," says Makky. Lips were downplayed in M.A.C Hello Kitty Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Fish. "I love these because the balm texture allows you to wear trendy shades like pale pink without going crazy."

Make-up Artist Jeffrey Paul on Freida Pinto

Makeup artist Jeffrey Paul (who works with Dior) works with her (and does her hair)... Here are his thoughts on his dream client:

"Freida Pinto is the changing face of beauty. She has what every girl dreams of: big eyes, beautiful eyebrows, high cheekbones and a smile that lights up the room. In India, black eyeliner called kohl is almost an everyday staple. I think some of the trends we're going to start to see more of, inspired by this Bollywood beauty and actresses like Freida, are black eyeliner, colorful eyes, large eyelashes, liner on the inside of the eyes, shimmery natural lips, warmed complexions, long, silky hair and high ponytails."

Long, spiral curls, inspire many celebrity hairstyles

Long wavy hairstyles will work for any occasion. Get the long wavy look by wrapping small sections of hair around a medium barrel curling iron and hold in a vertical position. Gisele, see photo left, shows us how this hairstyle is done in Hollywood.

Gisele let out her radiant waves. Layers cut through the edges gave her natural wave lovely bounce and created body and movement all over. This hairstyle is best suited to those with a natural wave or curl.

How to Style:Apply styling mousse to wet hair, then using a large radial brush, smooth the hair concentrating on the bangs and crown area. Apply small amounts of wax to the entire hair to give definition and texture throughout.

Lakshmi Menon in Fall 2009's Make-up Trends [Badgley Mischka]

For Badgley Mischka's models, makeup artist Tom Pecheux created "a cocktail look that's slightly less formal than what I would do for a red carpet. We did not want it to be too dramatic," says Pecheux, who used M.A.C products to achieve the look.

Pecheux kept the skin simple and fresh using matte foundation (M.A.C Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation) and pale pink blush (M.A.C Hello Kitty Beauty Powder Blush in Tippy). He created an ombre effect on the eyes using navy shimmer (M.A.C Eye Shadow in Deep Truth) and gray shadows (M.A.C Eye Shadow in Scene), accented with gold pencil (M.A.C Cosmetics Glitter Eye Liner in Her Glitz) along the lower lash lines. He muted the color of each model's lips using a nude pencil (M.A.C Lip Pencil in Oak) and a swipe of sheer lavender gloss (M.A.C Cremesheen Glass in Ever So Rich).

Ujjwala Raut and her Make-up Favorites

"My hormones went crazy post pregnancy and I had a lot of pimples. Again, water and fruits did the trick. My favourite beauty product is Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush in 2-Pink. It gives the cheeks a baby pink color. I also use Rosebud Salve: Lip Balm.
Other tips I could suggest include getting a facial done at least once a month. Also, try a papaya mask or some natural mask that suits your skin. Apply lotion on your skin every time you wash your face. Skin should not be left without lotion as it tends to dry. Also scrub it regularly, as this helps remove dirt, black heads and white heads."

Sticker Shock

So...I was flipping through my most recent mailing from Ulta today, checking out the deals and new beauty products--doing general Kiss and Makeup research.

Anyway, I saw this great new product:

Peter Thomas Roth
Lashes To Die For
Longer, thicker, fuller lashes!
Revolutionary, patent-pending complex dramatically enhances appearance of natural lashes. Within just 4-8 weeks, independent consumer studies prove 64% saw longer lashes, 67% saw thicker and fuller lashes, based on consumer studies.

My initial response? Awesome! Who can't use thicker, longer, fuller lashes? I want to try this out for all my dedicated Kiss and Makeup readers! It would be a win-win: I would try out a new product and get the possible benefit, and you all would be able to decide whether or not to buy this product based on my field work.

I was ready to make my purchase...

And then I saw how much Lashes To Die For would set me back: $125. For one stinking tube. $125.

Yeah...I think I'll pass. Sorry. My budget cannot justify a $125 test run.

Damn economy!

Twinkling Stars

This look is almost entirely made of glitter - the only thing I added as a base was Bare Canvas to even out my lid's skintone (which is naturally rather dark) and, of course, Fixing Gel to make the glitter adhere. Then I applied first the gold glitter, using my fingers and MAC's #242 brush alternately, and added some more Fixing Gel for the stars, which I sprinkled on top. Finally, I glued on a pair of Ardell Lashes and applied some mascara and black liner to my waterline:

Lakshmi Menon in Fall 2009's Make-up Trends [Carolina Herrera]

The look for Carolina Herrera’s show on Monday was Beth Porter (ladylike) meets Shane McCutcheon (rough)…a look that had me head over heels in love. Makeup Artist Diane Kendal used makeup from M.A.C. Cosmetics at the show. With strict direction from Herrera herself, the designer wanted models to have a more luminous look. Kendal lined the models eyes with a nude shimmer pencil on the bottom inside of the eyelid. On the brow bone and cheeks, Kendal used a white pearlized pigment ( this technique allowed the light to pick up the shimmer when models walked down the runway). Foundation was applied very lightly, used more like a tinted moisturizer than a blemish coverup. To warm up the cheeks, Kendal used the M.A.C. Mineralize blush in peach and finished the look by using the popular Twig color M.A.C. lipstick and Dazzle Glass berry lip-gloss.

Haircut 100

I am recovering from being sick with a cold/flu and I'm also slowly getting back into work mode after being away for a week of break. During my scheduled week off, I made an appointment for a much needed hair cut and color. Because of my illness, I was forced to cancel and my hair is now an unruly mess. I am in desperate need of a restyle.

When it comes to hair, I wonder: how many of us have a signature look? It's all too easy to get used to a particular style....hell--people have hair ruts that last decades! If you have a signature hair style, do you actually like your style? Or are you ready for a change?

Me? On a good day, my hair style is inspired by Veronica Lake (above). On a bad day, I look more like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth (below), as I mentioned before. Apart from getting bangs in the Winter of '07-'08, my hair hasn't changed drastically in years...it's always been blonde, shoulder length, and pretty far from fabulous.

I think I want a change! If you're like me and need to change it up, here are some tips for getting a new style that you'll love:

  • First, figure out how much change you're willing to undergo. Sure, it might seem exciting to go from bleach-blonde to jet black overnight, but that sort of change could be more shocking than you're ready for. Make sure you are able to deal with seeing yourself in a whole new way. Also, take into consideration how your new look will fit in with your professional and personal life.
  • Be realistic. If you don't like to spend a lot of time styling your hair, you may not want to pick a 'do that will require hours of complex styling. Also take into consideration things you cannot change, like your hair's texture.
  • Flip through magazines or look online for hairstyles you might like. Don't get too hung up with a model's hair color...focus on the cut, the style, the profile, etc.
  • Take several options in with you when you see your stylist. Talk about what you want, and listen to the stylist's advice. If they don't think a pixie-cut will work for your face/hair type, they'll tell you. Your stylist wants you to look good and to be happy with your hair in the long term. They're professionals and they know what they're doing--listen to them!
  • If you don't have (or don't like) a stylist, ask friends, family, or co-workers where they go. Referrals are everything!
  • Pay attention when your hair is being dried and styled. Ask for step-by-step advice on recreating the look at home. This part is essential. It's all too easy to sit back in the stylist's chair and zone out or gossip while you're being worked on. Not good! Snap out of it and pay attention.
  • Give yourself time to get used to your new style. Your hair might go into shock after a drastic change. You may not be accustomed to seeing yourself with a different color/style. Don't panic if you don't love your cut/color immediately. Change can be jarring at first!
Ok--now I need to call my salon and get myself rescheduled...NOW!

Celebrity Hair - Jessica Alba Shows off New Hairstyle

Jessica Alba Shows off New Hairstyle at 2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Jessica Alba is known all around the world for being a natural beauty as well as having an acting talent that rivals all other female actresses. With fantastic films such as “Sin City” and “The Eye” we have seen Jessica Alba with a number of different hairstyles that are all in tune with the long and dark locks that we have come to know and love. Despite this, Jessica recently underwent somewhat of a transformation, having her hair cut much shorter and with a more feminine style in her clothing.

Jessica Alba Latest Hair in 2009

At the 2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards, we saw Jessica with a hairstyle that would once be considered as a fashion faux pas! Her long bangs were not in the usual style of bangs; worn straight or sweeping to the side, but were actually in a curtain type shape, something that once would have been looked at in shock and horror but on this dark haired beauty actually looked quite good!

Jessica Alba 2009 Hairstyle

With her hair looking full of volume and lightly tousled, Jessica Alba teamed pretty and natural hair with a gorgeous pink dress and just a hint of makeup, showing that not only was she a beauty on screen but off it as well.
Although the curtain look is not one that many people can pull off with this much ease, it is an easy look to recreate and just needs a little bit of blow drying and a bit of volume on the top as so not to make the hair look too underdone.

Makeup Junkie Oscar 2009 Hits & Misses

It's Oscar time and it has got Makeup Junkie back into the swing of things! Many apologies for the lack of updates last week but we're back to share with you our favourite (and not-so-favourite) beauties on the red carpet at the Oscars.

Best Dressed Hair/Makeup/Gown:

Anne Hathaway was my absolute favourite of the night. Many of you may think her pale skin needed a little colour but I think she pulls off Hollywood glamour quite effortlessly. Her Armani Prive fishtail dress awash in "paillettes" was stunning and looked pretty and sparkly! The hair and makeup were kept simple, classic and beautiful. An although she didn't win the Oscar, she won our Best Dressed of the night!

image: socialitelife.celebuzz.com/

Best Gowns:

I just think Freida Pinto is just gorgeous and it was nice to see a bright pop of colour on the red carpet. Her John Galliano number had lovely detailing in all the right places.

Marisa Tomei's performance in "The Wrestler" was fantastic and alarming because I didn't expect to see so much of her! All I can say is that I hope my body will look that good when I am her age! I thought her Versace gown was absolutely stunning. I also loved her loose up-do and neutral makeup.

image: justjared.buzznet.com

I loved this colour on the beautiful Alicia Keys. It's a shade rarely seen on the red carpet.
The design was simple and flowy but the colour was what gave the "it" factor. I loved her Old Hollywood inspired makeup and hair.

Another pale beauty (really pale!), Evan Rachel Wood, plays up the red carpet perfectly in this gorgeous gown. Yes, the dress and her almost look like one but I just love the detail.

Best Icons:

We just had to add in Meryl Streep and SATC Queen, SJP. Meryl Streep is lovely and a top notch actress - 15 Oscar nominations! She can do no wrong. Sarah Jessica Parker's dress was like a fairy tale but not my favourite on her, however, she's still Carrie Bradshaw in my eyes and she can get away with anything!

Disappointments:

Natalie Portman is usually a red carpet fave but we just couldn't fall in love with tonight's look. She is no doubt drop-dead-gorgeous. The dress was pretty but we're not sure the colour was the best for her. Her makeup could have been bumped up a notch too. We know Angelina Jolie is known for her signature Evil-I'm-More-Superior-Than-You look and for wearing black but we were a little bored of her dress. The hair and pale lips are also a little predictable don't you think?

Worse Dressed:

And the award goes to - Beyonce! I love dresses that show off the curves but this dress with gold roses all over was just tacky. The bottom of the gown looked like drapes gathered together. I'm glad she kept the hair and makeup simple but it was so plain there was nothing else redeeming about her look.

Who were your Oscar favourites?? Makeup Junkie wants to know!

Freida Pinto's Oscars' Hair-do Breakdown

Celebrity stylist, Jeffrey Paul, created a fresh and elegant red carpet hair look for Frieda Pinto. Radiant in John Galliano, Pinto’s hair is divided into three parts and twisted back into an architectural, couture flower shape on the right side of the head. “This look has a beautiful architecture; hair is twisted back into a youthful, feminine flower shape that complements Frieda’s face shape and stunning Galliano gown.” Here’s how to get Pinto’s look:

  • Blow dry hair back to add lift and height at the roots.
  • Create a left side part and divide hair into three sections: three quarters of hair in one section on the right and the remaining hair into two smaller sections.
  • Pull the right section of hair back into a low ponytail just behind the right ear above the nape of the neck.
  • Work Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into each of the remaining sections and twist back and around the flower shape, creating a layered, rose-like effect. “The three twists flow together for beautiful movement,” said Paul.
  • Lastly, shake the head a bit to loosen up the look and provide a sense of natural movement.
