Make-up Trend: Dewy Skin

At the unveiling of the Lonely Planet Magazine, Kareena Kapoor's skin glowed on stage. For a similar effect, polish your skin with a gentle exfoliator with round scrubbing beads, which are gentle enough for sensitive complexions. Follow with a lightweight moisturizer on dry areas like the forehead and cheeks, where there are fewer oil glands. If you still need a bit of coverage, brush on translucent powder instead of pressed—it provides an airy, more natural finish.

I'm getting married....

(this is me with the "bridal" look)(and this is much blonder, and fair-er friend, on her wedding day, with the same make-up I did for her)

just kidding....
but if you are.....here is a super-asked-for look....wedding-bridal make-up...this is the day that most every girl has dreamed about her whole life. Even if you're not getting married, this is a great, beautiful look...and I show you tricks and tips to make your make-up last all day and possibly all night too!
On this day you will be like a celebrity...probably the most photographed day of your entire life...so you should look like a star too!

This is the most, most, most requested look I get when brides ask for make-up (and I've done countless bride's make-up)
this is how it usually goes:
kandee: so what look do you want?
bride: a clean, fresh, dewy, smokey eye!

All those sound like they'd be hard to put together...but I'll show you how to do it...and everyone looks stunning with this look. Also, how I show you to apply it, brides have told me that they have woken up the next day and still looked just as good as when I put it on them.

I hope this helps make you feel extra glamorous and will make your groom's jaw drop when you walk down the aisle!

Remember:
*make sure not to get any facial treatments 2 weeks prior to your big day (facials bring all the dirt down in the pores to the surface and cause "breakouts")
*make sure you get all your facial waxing done at least a week prior to wedding day
*make sure you don't drink any alcohol the morning of the wedding (it will cause redness in the face which no concealer will hide)
*up your water intake to half your weight in ounces, every day, for clearer, non-puffy face
*make sure you relax and enjoy every moment...it will be over sooner than you think....and remember, things will go wrong...so just expect something to go wrong...and you won't get too upset. (every wedding I have done make-up for, something has gone wrong...and not one of them has ever started on time! ha ha ha)

I hope this helps you look and feel absolutely gorgeous, and I am honored to get to share this with you to be a part of such a special day for you!!!
huge love, kandee

little kandee....

(I am smiling away on the far left....then my neighbor Mark, and my lil sis Tiffany..the other dark haired little lady)

some days...i wish I could go back and be 6 or 7 again...no worries except what to play...that smiley little girl is still me....we are all that same little person...with usually the same likes, the same dreams....I still like all the same stuff...photography, drawing, decorating things, dressing up, smiling, making up movies in my head...dancing and twirling....
and then
some days
...and I had one yesterday...I was walking to my car....and so many things had happened that day.....tears started fuzzing up my eyeballs....
I talked to my mama....tears started fuzzing up my eyes again.....
I talked to my sister.....tears...

I was hit with some "less-than-lovely" news yesterday...(read yesterday's blog to see why I can't talk about it yet...even though I would rather be an open book..and share all my life happenings)...
and I am not going to say "things can't get any worse"...because right when you do that.....OH something will happen!...ha ha ha

then I realized...everything is all how you look at it....and I said, "you know, this isn't so bad....I've been through a whole lot worse"...this is all do-able....I can handle all of this....
God wouldn't give me more than I can handle...and God must think I'm pretty strong...ha ha ha
I know all this is going to make be tougher....I probably won't get my feelings hurt like I used to, when someone would say something mean, like in high school.....now I get mean comments about me all the time...ha ha ha ha

If today seems hard or sad....know you're not alone...
The sun is shining brightly this morning....I have a smile in my heart....despite any "unpleasant" things I have to deal with....
And we wil be life-warriors....nothing is going to break us...no one is going to break us....we are strong....we will resist others evil words and actions....
we will go after our dreams with a passion....we will spread love and be a light in a dark and unhappy world...
and we will be a source of love and encouragement to others....
I know you all have already been this for me!!!

This was typed with love and a smile....and I hope it brightens your day...
you're more beautiful than you know
more talented than you think
and more loved than you can imagine....

your friend, kandee

Spring Preview Review: Benefit Flawless Complexion Helpers

I swear, whoever is behind the packaging design over at Benefit knows what makes girly-girl beauty lovers squeal with delight! It's no secret that I absolutely adore the packaging, but what's even better? Their products are actually functional.

Benefit Confessions of a Concealaholic ($44 CDN, available March 2010): The pad-lock diary packaging brings me back to my youth. When I received this kit I seriously squealed like a little girl. My husband turned to me and said, "Like a kid in a candy store". So true. How brilliant is this concealing and brightening kit? You have everything you need to spackle, cover and brighten in here.

Kit includes: travel-size "that gal" brightening face primer, boi-ing concealer in 1 & 2, travel-size erase paste No.2, eye bright, lemon-aid colour correcting eye-lid primer, and 4 concealer/brightner brushes. Inside is a good sized mirror and comes with a complete step-by-step guide for the makeup challenged.

erase paste is my god-send! I never leave home without it. This tub of creamy goodness brightens and conceals all in one. You can read a past review here. boi-ing concealer is a heavy duty cover-up but only comes in 3 shades. I like to use lemon-aid after plucking because it gets rid of the redness. As a primer it works ok but it did crease my shadows a bit. I've used eye bright back in the day but was not a fan because it gave my under eyes a slight grey cast and gave me a rash. That's just on me though. It was my first time trying "that gal" brightening face primer and I'm in love! I loved how radiant the pink primer made my skin look and my makeup stayed fresh all day. Will definitely get a full-sized version when this is done.

Overall, the concept is genius if you have fair to maybe medium-dark skin but if your skin is any darker the shades will look off. Now if Benefit would extend their shades then we're talking!

Benefit STAY Don't Stray stay-put primer for concealers & eyeshadows ($30, available February 2010):  I was really excited when I heard Benefit would be coming out with a primer for eyes and concealer. When I received it, I put it to the test right away.

The Good: The primer is really concentrated and a little goes a long way. It contains vitamins C & E to fight the signs of aging. The primer helped even out and brightened up my eyelids.

The Bad: First, I expected the primer to be clear but it in reality looks like a light beige concealer. I think going clear would have been a better option. I found that it changed the shade of my concealer, therefore, making my under eyes look white. Secondly, I hate the airless pump. Every single time way too much product would dispense. Since it is so concentrated, I'd end up dabbing a tiny bit and wasting the rest. Third, rather than making the skin around my eyes look hydrated, it dried out my skin and enhanced my fine lines. And lastly, my shadow didn't crease but did fade by the end of the day.

I rarely get disappointed with Benefit products but this one was not a winner for me. I'd be interested to hear other reviews! :)

Benefit Bathina "take a picture...it lasts longer..." ($32, available February 2010):  Similar to Bathina "body so fine", this golden-pink velvet body balm makes your skin look luminous. Just brush on wherever you'd like a little sheen and glow. Your skin will feel fabulous from the jojoba seed oil, natural aloe extract, and vitamin E ingredients. Oh, and the velvet puff - love! Pamper yourself by smoothing the balm on with the cushiony-pillow.

Benefit Cosmetis available at Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix Beauty Boutiques, Murale, and select Holt Renfrew locations beginning February 2010.

Stay tuned for eye shadow swatches from the Spring collection!

Week of Beauty Products (4): Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask

What is it? Neutorgena's Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask "is a breakthrough acne-fighting formula that can be used two ways:

  • As a Daily Cleanser to kill the bacteria that can cause blackheads and breakouts. Gently massage the rich creamy lather over skin and rinse with water.
  • As an Intensive Mask for deep cleansing and extra oil control. Smooth an even layer over skin, allowing the formula to penetrate for up to 5 minutes before rinsing with water. You'll feel it's cooling intensity build as it penetrates into the pores."
Available at drugstores for less than $8.00

What did you think? I used this both ways--as a face wash and as a mask. As a fave wash, I found this product to be over-drying. I don't have acne-prone skin and prefer something a bit more gentle for an everyday cleanser.

As a mask, this product is much better. It goes on cool and then kind of tingles as it sits. I guess the tingle is how you know it's working? Anyway, it leaves my skin feeling very clean and like I dunked my face in menthol. And that's not a negative comment!

Be careful with this product for two reasons:

1) It can make your skin dry out. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizer if necessary.
2) It contains benzoyl peroxide so it can stain or discolor fabrics (especially towels....just ask me how I know!).

The final verdict? It's a good price and it's made by normally reliable Neutrogena, so that's a plus. Watch out for over-drying (and be careful with your towels) and you're set. I would recommend it for use as a mask to avoid the over-drying issue.

Love Letters....

how not to have a bad day....

1. don't answer the phone to get some really not-so-good-news (which I wish I could share with all of you that I care for...but unfortunately, there are a few unkind people who only look at my blog and facebook, so that they can make little comments about me and post them everywhere)

2. don't get even more bad news on the phone.....

3. don't wake up after getting 4 hours of sleep because you were up working on the computer

....I did all of those things.....

I felt numb as I drove in my car......I grabbed my mail key and went into the post office....
as I opened the door...."love letters" started spilling all over the place!
My heart...in that instant felt so loved and uplifted....as my eyes looked at all the carefully written addresses on the envelopes.....
I carefully took all my "precious parcels"......and walked to my car...where I spent over an hour, looking at each envelope, and appreciating each letter that someone hand wrote....(or even typed)...they are all so wonderful.....from the handmade cards, to little goodies inside...to the precious words of love, hope, and encouragement...to getting a peek into your heart and lives from your stories!
I spent over an hour sitting in the parking lot in my car, opening each letter...and I could feel my "love tank" filling up....and the numbness started to melt away!

There aren't enough words in the world to tell you what each of those letters mean to me! I will save and cherish each one!
THANK YOU!!!!! I want to THANK EVERYONE that mailed me a "love letter"......(I liked the one with the 2 pennies in it too!) Thank you so much for taking the time out of your lives to share a gift with me.....that touched my heart, on a day that I could use it so much!!! Each word was like a ray of sunshine warming my heart! I love all my letters!!!! And all of you that wrote them! You guys are truly amazing!!!

I hope today that we all can spread more love to a hurting world.....whether it's a letter, a gift, a kind word, or maybe just a hug.....and we can throw love out into the world like a BOOMERANG...and it will come back to us, too!

huge love to all my precious, sweet, and very caring friends....huge hugs and love, kandee

here;'s a video I made last night....that I just wanted to share with all of you...from my heart!

Spring Preview Review: Sweet Cheeks!

Stop, you're makin' me blush! From candy pinks to sweet peaches, you'll want to show off those cheeks this Spring. Don't be coy - blush on with these sweeter than sweet blushes!

Coral Peaches:

Top swatch: not blended, Bottom swatch: blended

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Cabo Coral (available February 2010):  I am all over this creamy blush - one of my favourites for Spring! Cabo Coral  gives the cheeks a gorgeous healthy glow, perfect for this drab weather or if you suffer from dry skin. This coral-peach shade gives you a beachy pop of colour, a definite perk-me-up shade. I also found it to last into the evening without retouching. The texture works great as a stain if you don't suffer from chapped lips. I liked patting this onto the lips then adding a gloss over top for some depth and moisture.

Tip: To guarantee longer wear on the cheeks, apply after foundation then set with translucent powder.

M.A.C. Blush Ombre in Ripe Peach (Spring Colour Forecast available February 2010):  How gorgeous does this blush look in the compact? I love the gradient colour of coral to light peach - another staple for Spring! The Spring Colour Forecast features for colour stories: coral, pink/lavender, yellow/gold and plum/burgundy.

Ripe Peach is from the coral family and is a striking shade that gives your cheeks a sweet pop of colour. The texture is super blendable and leaves a subtle glow. The shimmer isn't over the top either so you don't have to worry about appearing too shiny.

Top swatch: blended, Bottom swatch: not blended

Beauté Cosmetics Liqui-Gel Stains in Neon: Memories of neon bring me back the garish 80's but Beauté's version is anything but! The neon orange may look shocking in the tube, but once its blended you will adore the coral-pink glow it leaves behind. These stains have some serious staining power too - you have about 12 seconds before it sets so I suggest dabbing a little at a time (if you don't want it to stain your fingers blend with a blush brush or sponge). You won't have to worry about this blush fading throughout the day.

Bonus: you can use this on the lips as well! The gel texture cushions your lips and works best when your lips are dry. However, if you have chapped-skin the stain will only enhance it. Moisturize your lips when you start applying your makeup.  By the time you get to your lips, the lip balm will have set into your lips then you can apply the stain.

Benefit Sugarbomb Boxed Powder:  Swirl these four shades of peach, soft plum, shimmering pink and rose together and your cheeks will get a sweet rush of colour - or so they say. I got to test this powder out back in October only I didn't test it on myself. This blush is a sheer peach-pink on fair to medium skinned beauties but on medium-dark skin like moi, it barely shows up. I was so excited when I was sent a sample but disappointed after trying it. However, it works nicely as a highlighter or an all-over powder but I have enough of those!

Lancome Pop 'n Cheeks Blush in Coral Flirt (O My Rose by Aaron de Mey available February 2010):  Love the presentation of this blush - it's like a little piece of art. The peachy-coral shade is very pretty but the gold glittery shimmer is a little too intense for me. Yes, you can apply the colours separately then use the gold as a highlighter but if you're using a proper sized blush brush that just doesn't work. All that bling on the face during the day might cause some to squint so I'd recommend this blush for a fun night out.

Pinks/Berries:

Cargo Blush in Amalfi (available February 2010 in CVS and select indy boutiques): I was a Cargo blush virgin until recently! After I received a sample of Amalfi, I immediately knew why Cargo's blush was a cult classic. First of all, the texture applies like butter and is so pigmented. The jumbo size and the amount of colour pay-off is so worth the price!

Amalfi is a shimmering hot pink which my cheeks are just loving! If you're looking for a neutral pink then this is not your shade. Amalfi is like a baby doll pink with some attitude. For a girly flush, apply on the apples of the cheek but for something more sophisticated apply Amalfi over a bronzer - gorgeous!

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush in Plum: I was completely shocked at how much I would love this blush! I received a sample back in November and its been in heavy rotation ever since. These ultra creamy oil-free blushes not only give you a healthy glow but nourishes your skin with anti-oxidants and anti-aging properties at the same time.

The plum shade is a sophisticated version of a girly flush. When I apply this shade, my skin instantly looks brighter (love using this when I've had a late night). They are super blendable and long-lasting. It doesn't say you can apply on your lips but I do anyways. My lips look plump and soft and it doesn't dry out them out either.

100% Pure Strawberry Gel Cheek Tint: 100% natural, 100% vegan and gluten-free. This is the philosophy behind the all natural vegan line 100% Pure. The colour is derived from antioxidant and vitamin rich fruit.

Upon opening this blush you'll want to squirt it into your mouth but resist the urge! The yummy strawberry scent is delicious and the strawberry-pink shade is even better! The gel applies sheer so you won't over do it but you can definitely layer for more pop. And since it's all natural why not swipe some onto your lips!

Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi-Use Blush in Crush 201:  Vapour Organic Beauty is a certified organic line that uses organic mineral pigments to colour their products. Aura Multi-Use Blush can be used on the cheeks, eyes and lips - big fans of multi-tasking products at Makeup Junkie!

Crush is a soft petal pink that reminds me of the first bloom of spring. It applies sheer on the first application but becomes a brighter pink after 2 more applications. The dewy finish was fresh and natural. Love the on-the-go and travel-friendly packaging, perfect for when you're in a rush.

What blushes are you excited to swipe on your cheeks for Spring?

Week of Beauty Products (3): Knu Anti-Aging Tri-Complex

What is it? Michael Todd's Knu Anti-Aging Tri-Complex is "the first cream in the United States to include this amazing anti-aging breakthrough. The cream has a high concentration of purified snail secretion manufactured exclusively for Michael Todd in an FDA Registered Facility here in the U.S.

Research published in The International Society of Skin Pharmacology Journal reveals the regenerative properties of snail secretion and its effects on human skin. Scientists have concluded that this same substance can aid many human skin disorders because of its regenerative properties, considering it a real breakthrough in natural skin treatment. According to the study, snail secretion protects against free radicals, environmental pollution and UV radiation.

KNU is luxuriously rich and creamy, not greasy or oily, with a fresh clean smell and is rapidly absorbed into the skin where it can go to work." Available online for $130.

What did you think? First off, let me say that this product in no way smells like "snail secretions" (or as we put it, snail snot!). It's a lovely, creamy white moisturizer that smells clean. Also, I received a sample of this product, so for me, the cost was not an issue.

The cream is thick and luxurious and a little goes a long way. Because it's winter, my skin is dryer and at times flakier than I'd like. Lovely, huh? KNU seems very moisturizing--it clears up my flaky patches with very little product. I just put some on, and when I run my fingers over my cheek, they seem softer.

I cannot yet attest to the anti-aging properties of this product. I'll need to give it more time (I've only been using it for a week) to see how it plays out.

The final verdict? Again, I need to give this one a little more time to really see what it can do. It does feel good going on and so far I'm happy with the results. Snail snot! Who knew?

I just wish it wasn't quite so expensive!

Week of Beauty Products (2): Shielding Lotion

What is it? Skin MD Shielding Lotion "is far more effective as a dry skin treatment than conventional moisturizing lotions or protective creams. If you suffer from dry skin, you know that just using a moisturizing lotion does not solve the problem. A shielding lotion does much more than just treat dry skin – it is a new kind of skin care product that makes a real difference to all skin types.

Skin MD Natural is promptly absorbed, without the slightest hint of any greasy or oily feeling or residue, transforming the outer layer of skin into a hydrating invisible shield." Available online for less than $20 a bottle (I saw it as high as $18 and as low as $10--shop around).

What did you think? At first I was nervous about using a product designed for "face, hands, and body" on my face. I was scared that it would be too heavy. I was gladly mistaken.

My husband uses this product every day (I've used it occasionally), so his review of the product was important to me. He says the product absorbs easily into his skin. He doesn't feel greasy--or, as he puts it, "sweaty,"--after applying it. He says the dry patches on his skin are minimized after using it, so it does exactly what a moisturizer is meant to do.

Another plus is that it's fragrance-free and it is not tested on animals.

I found that I had a hard time figuring out how much of the product to use at first. It seemed that when I applied the product, I had too much on my skin. But after a few minutes, my skin seemed to have sucked up the moisturizer and felt a bit tight--a bit in need of more moisturizer. (I don't need to point out that my husband and I have different skin types!) After a few days of using it, I figured out how much to use...problem solved.

The final verdict? I really do like the fact that this can be used on all skin--face, hands, body, etc. I'm a fan of a multi-tasker, so I say give this one a try!

the blues....avatar style...

feeling blue...or better yet, want to just look blue?

I got so many requests for this Avatar look...it was so fun to do...I love when I get to be really creative...and do a fun look like this!

Everybody can use a little extra art & creativity in their day...whether it's looking through a magazine that inspires you...to wearing a little something that feels extra creative, to even getting the big guns out...and maybe painting or tinkering around on a piano and guitar...
Anything that will cause "creative fireworks" to go off in your heart!

Remember that sometimes you need to "light the fireworks" of creativity in your heart....they won't just sparkle all by there little selves!

Back to the make-up...
So I used airbrush make-up to do all the base make-up and contouring, and I used the regular white airbrush make-up and a plain old paint brush to do the dots....
If you want an airbrush, you can get a deal on one from Dinair - they are the originators of airbrush make-up...I love their products and their entire staff!

Iridescence

Recently, while cleaning up my Pure Luxe collection, I came across "Enchanted" and knew instantly that I would have to do a look with it again! It's a fabulous colour and I haven't used it for so long... So I decided to do something all with duochromes and iridescent colours: I applied PL Enchanted in the middle of the lid and framed it with Barry M. Aqua Gold. Then I defined the inner crease with Chartreuse and the outer corner with Orchid and All Girl:

Please excuse the fact that the lashes are all crooked - I only realised they had completely lost their shape when they were already sticking to my lids :S

Product List
MAC Bare Canvas, Pure Luxe Enchanted, Barry M. Aqua Gold, Pure Luxe Orchid, MAC Chartreuse, MAC All Girl, Manhattan JT, Maybelline Expression kohl in white, CG Lash Blast, wet 'n wild lashes, basic rhinestones

I also wanted to share a picture of my new necklace with you! I bought it on Etsy from Chic Baby Rose and I ♥ it! It's a pink cupcake and a silver crown with rhinestones:
